Guest guest
Hi ; I am " sensitive " to all dairy products, alcohol, and MSG. The minute I ingest any of these, the flare-ups are unbearable. All other foods are fine with me. Not everyone has the same reaction to the same foods. It is up to you to find out which ones with aggravate or trigger a flare-up. Just keep track of what you eat and pay attention to the pain level soon after. You'll figure it out very quickly. Good luck. thmain <thmain@...> wrote: I am still new to this list and learning more and more each day. I am so thankful to have found such a supportive group of people and I think I am at a point in my life where the anger is ending and I am needing to control the RA instead of it controlling me. Please forgive me because this is going to sound like a stupid question but I have seen people talk about different foods causing or making flares worse. I would love to learn more about the types of foods that does this or is it different for every person? I have had RA for four years and have always asked my rheumatologist if there was a relationship between flares and food but have never been able to find information on it. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again,
Guest guest
Dear , Please don't feel that you have to apologize for any questions to this list. I've asked some questions myself that I'm sure people have answered many times before; but the group has always been patient, welcoming and helpful with answers. I agree with that it's different for each of us. It would be great if there was one easy answer, but we keep seeing that each of us needs a different collection of meds, etc.; and it's the same way with food. So, I'll just share some things I've learned about diet & RA. What works for me is to try being super aware of what I'm eating and how I feel afterward. I've learned a lot about what affects me and when. Some general dietary recommendations that are usually given--Be careful with: nightshades (peppers, white potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes), refined sugar, dairy products, caffeine, sodas, wheat/gluten products. (But some people do just fine with some or all of these.) If you want to go deeper into researching this, you'll see that some people have recommendations about oils to avoid (but olive oil is always mentioned as a *good* oil), spices & nuts to avoid and so on. Try to eat lots of veggies, fruit, and whole grains with whatever meat or fish you're using. (I'm a vegetarian myself, so I haven't researched which meat or fish is best.) Drink plenty of water. Knowing some of this, just be aware of what affects you and when. For instance, if I'm doing really well--no flare & feeling generally good--an occasional pizza (cheese, wheat, tomatoes. . .oh my!) is just fine. If I'm more vulnerable, just a little cheese can push me over the edge into more pain. If I have a little bit of chocolate on rare occasions, no problem. If I go on a chocolate binge, I'm in trouble. I'm sure other, more knowledgeable, folks will offer more wisdom for you. And, remember, don't be afraid to ask. :-) Prakasha On Mar 29, 2006, at 8:30 PM, thmain wrote: > I am still new to this list and learning more and more each day. I am > so thankful to have found such a supportive group of people and I > think I am at a point in my life where the anger is ending and I am > needing to control the RA instead of it controlling me. > > Please forgive me because this is going to sound like a stupid > question but I have seen people talk about different foods causing or > making flares worse. I would love to learn more about the types of > foods that does this or is it different for every person? > > I have had RA for four years and have always asked my rheumatologist > if there was a relationship between flares and food but have never > been able to find information on it. > > Any insight would be greatly appreciated! > > Thanks again, > > > > > > > > >
