Guest guest
Hi Everyone....Guess what???? Folic Acid is no longer covered by Medicare Part D...They have taken it off their formulary....The reason, it is a vitamin supplement and they are not going to cover vitamin and mineral supplements....Even though the amount most of us take 1mg is much stonger that the over the counter one....My pharmacist said I would have to take 6 over the counter Folic Acid pills to equal one prescribed...I called my HMO insurance plan (Secure Horizons), and told them I take Folic Acid because I also take MTX...They said it was not their decision to remove it that it was Medicare Part D decision...They said to write to my US congressman and Senator and tell them that I have an autoimmune disease and that Folic Acid is a necessary med that I must take...Not because I am a health nut, but because I need it to stay on top of my disease and manage it the best I can and Folic Acid will help to obtain that objective. They also said that I should besiege them to look into putting it back on the formulary for those of us with autoimmune diseases.....I have one other choice and that is to have my rheumy request an exception in writing and perhaps Medicare will cover it....This request could take forever..... Here we go folks...One more med that is not covered by the most wonderful of presciption plans,,LOL..Although, it is better than before when there was no presciption coverage, in my opinion, Medicare Part D has a lot to be desired...and needs to be fixed ASAP...For those of us on fixed incomes it sure is difficult to make ends meet each month and here is one more added expense that has to be figured into our meager income.... I am asking all of you who are on Medicare Part D to write, E-mail or call your US Congressman and Senators and ask them to put Folic Acid back on the formulary and not remove any meds that are necessary to help us fight our battle against autoimmune deseases...Thank you,,Hugs
