hi everyone, my 12 year old son who has bad thought OCD has been on 50mg of

Zoloft for one year he has been ocd free for 4 months. The Zoloft caused

significant weight gain. His psychologist said that he could wean off the zoloft

since hes been ocd free. Well we weaned him off the zoloft ands he started

having insomnia and nightmares, they were vivid nightmares very visual. He

missed a whole week of school due to the nightmares and no sleep. I went to his

psychologist who added Topomax while he is weaning off zoloft. I looked up

topomax and I dont understand why she would add this drug. This drug has its own

hellish side effects as well as serious withdraw symotoms> I called the

pharmacist who stated that he never heard of topomax for help with the withdraw

sypmtoms>Anyway I want him off meds totally right now so I wonder whats up with

the topomax I just called the doc Im waiting for her to call back. Does anyone

know of topomax being used for this reason?

Hi

The only reason I can think of , for adding Topomax, would be to make him

sleep, but the thing is, there are other much safer " sleep aids " than using an

off label mood stabilizer( an anti convulsant). My daughter , who is 13 and was

diagnosed in the past with bipolar, was put on Topomax, and than we discontinued

it due to her vision getting blurry.

I was put on Topomax also, for my headaches, and I had to go off of it too. I

was so tired I could barely speak or function, and I lost about 15 lbs, in less

than six weeks.

I would consider telling the doc you don't feel comfortable with this med. There

are many others he could take instead.

Keep us posted

Hugs

I haven't read it being used to help with withdrawal from an SSRI or for sleep

issues, etc. I know I have read it being used with an SSRI to help stop weight

gain, even lose gained weight due to an SSRI.

Pyschologist and not child pyschiatrist? I would not

let a psychologist prescribe medication.

I don't get this at all. And I can't recommend what to do at this

point.

I personally would in the future if you go back on zoloft

(and you sounded like it helped) and decide to go off again to

take the whole process very slow. Reduce by 25% by cutting of the

tip of the tablet and if he is stable than keep that up for

a few weeks to a month. Then again reduce to 50% for another month

or so. I increase very slowly (one 12mg increments for a few weeks) for my

sensitive daughter and would do the same about reductions.

Some people are very sensitive to changes in medication.

Why would he recommend going off the Zoloft if he's only been symptom

free for 4 mos? I think they can add in a med. for the weight gain so

his OCD stays under control. Sounds to me like he was weaning off of the

Zoloft too fast. Sorry he's feeling like this!
