In light of all of these recent events, our district is instituting new security

measures. Part of this will be lock down drills. Of course my daughter has been

having a terrible time with anxiety lately and her teacher called me to ask how

to handle this with her. Any suggestions about how to prepare her for this type

of drill? The whole thing just makes me want to cry. Starting today at our

little ones preschool they have an employee " guarding " the door at pick up and

drop off. It is so sad that things have come to this. Thanks for any feedback.

these little girls. Is it just me, or are there more assaults of

little girls these days? Maybe I'm just more aware. I wonder if all

the porno on the internet is creating a whole group of pedophiles.

My heart goes out to their community. they have so much to bear right now.

I think what it is creating is a more educated pedophile, with a community

network of support and a grab bag of ideas the less devious would not have

thought of on their own, and negative reinforcement of the worst kind. I don't

know if there are more, but they sure are more apparent and sicker than before.

I can't even fully take in what happened at that school. How do you even

prepare a child for that? At school we have earthqualke drill, fire drills, and

we practice lockdowns, but what is the drill for insanity? My little girl is one

of the most anxious I know, just going from class to gym can be challenging. I

just try to surround her with teachers that know her well that she can turn to.

I don't want her growing up afraid, but I do want her growing up prepared.

Stay calm, matter of fact Do not reveal too much about why they have started

lockdowns now, just emphasis that it is a practice for safety, like a fire

drill. My daughter actually came to enjoy and look forward to fire drills.

Does she enjoy or use checklists? I don't know how old your daughter is, but

if she's nonverbal or prefers pictures,her aid could break it down on a picture

board or social story. My daughter Carmen is eight, but this was more of of an

issue when she was six. Social stories helped, but what worked best was " Cat

School " Every night after she was tucked in we would play school with all her

favourite stuffed animals and whatever was happening the next day I would work

into Teacher Cat's curriculumn, throwing a few silly things too to make her

laugh. For this one we would probably have had a dog drill lockdown, because

dogs were not allowed in cat school.

I " m sure you will find the best way to explain it to your daughter, and if the

first lockdown practice is tough, new experiences often are, and eventually they

seem to take some of this in stride.

Our vice principal never lets on she is guarding the door. She says good

morning to everyone with the most beautiful smile, every kid believes she is

there just waiting to see them. They all love her.

,I feel for you. We've been having lockdown drills here every

since Columbine. It's pretty pathetic when your first grader comes

home telling you how you're taught to stand along the wall so that

people cannot see inside the doors and be totally quiet. We also have

an actual police officer at school all day, every day in elementary

school.

maybe do a social story about how drills are to keep her safe? Any

Carol Gray-type stories at her site?

never know. I don't think porno on the internet is " awakening "

pedophiles-- especially since most of the porno is NOT child-related.

Plenty went on in the old days without being reported.

IMO there are more sicko's out there today because there are more people on

earth then a hundred years ago.

I don't think the internet makes people pedophiles but I think it makes

pedophiles lives easier because they have the access to the pornography and the

chilren through chat rooms, websites, etc.

I just got done reading an article that said that girl's are actually targeted

more in these types of crimes. Very very sad. The article also talked about how

even though small towns are relatively safer but when people hold a grudge it

can be more difficult to deal with. If you have or have had a problem with

someone in a small town you're so much more likely to run into them which can be

really hard to deal with after awhile.

Pedophiles have always been. I think it is simpler than that.

We teach it to our girls everyday. When big brother bonds with little

brother excluding their sister because she IS A Girl and we allow it, then

we teach our girl they are not good enough to be with boys. When dad

stashes Playboy under the bed calling it " clean pornography " and mom excuses

it as " boys will be boys " , we teach our girls that a woman being objectified

fulfills a male NEED that no one woman, not even mom or a loving marriage,

can fulfill alone. When parents grab a baby doll from their little boy who

is cradling it and singing to it and yell " that is for little girls " we are

teaching our boys that nurturing is ONLY for girls. When we give our boys a

condom before a date but ground our daughter because she went on birth

control, we teach our children that girls are alone responsible for

pregnancy and child rearing and that until that baby becomes a man, it is a

disposable piece of property.

We send our kids to school in a caste system. We teach our boys and girls

every day to compete simply because of their sex. We stifle creativity and

deny them the freedom to express their emotions. We dehumanize and

objectify girls EVERY DAY by our actions and we excuse our boys by allowing

them to think that " because I am a boy " is a good enough excuse to be

irresponsible, crude, violent or over sexualized.

It is all our faults every time we segregate by sex. Our economic

segregation hurts too. We treat truck drivers like incompetent low life's

or " blue collar trash. " How many signs do you see on the free way " we bare

all " attracting truck drivers? They get these guys worked up and teach them

it is ok to give into prostitution and pornography because they are " lonely "

men. We have all, men AND women alike, created a society that makes women

sexual objects and allowed men to believe they are unable to control their

sex drive. Women accept that every time they excuse it because women have

been taught that their needs are not as important as others needs.

We have been irresponsible with sex to the point sex isn't enough. Now we

sensationalize it - sex with more than one at once, trading partners, groups

sex - then they plaster all over tv that only young, slim, hour glass women

are attractive enough for sex. Then young girls learn that in order to get

that guy to kiss them, they need to dress sexy. If that isn't enough,

society then turns on the little girl and blames her for getting raped

because she dresses like a " slut " - taking the entire burden of

responsibility OFF the MAN who raped her. So other men follow suit and

girls learn that being raped is the girls fault and guys are simply

following their uncontrollable animal urge to mate.

Really. We shouldn't be surprised that most of violent crimes are against

women and 80% of violent criminals are men. We want change then we all need

to take responsibility for our actions, desires and needs.

My opinion anyway. I am sorry if I sound harsh but this happens to be a

topic where I get really frustrated because I am egalitarian.

Not child related? I know a man who was arrested for child porn. We have

known him a long time and he is working hard to heal. I have had an

opportunity to talk with him and learn about his problem. Child porn is

EASY to get, according to him. It is abundant and when they don't have

kids, they get young looking women to pretend they are kids. Many fathers

force their kids to comply.

Internet porn is terrible and a HUGE percentage of it, according to this

man, uses VERY young and very young looking women. The idea is toyed with

enough.

I do agree though that a lot is not reported because girls think it is their

fault.

, I wonder how much of sexist-type behaviors are just biological.

's cat had 5 kittens, 3 boys and 2 girls. We noted that the 2

girl kittens tended to play and sleep together, and the 3 boys tended

to play and sleep together, too. We thought it was just a wierd

coincidence the first time we noticed it, but it does seem to be

somewhat consistent. Now the 2 girls are calico and the 3 boys are

black & white, so perhaps there's some other varient like coloring or

even size that's coming into play -- the boys are a little bigger than

the girls.

I also heard of a book/Bible study called " Godly sex. " I think it's

about what sort of sexual fulfillment God smiles upon and what He

frowns upon. I haven't read/done the study, but I'ved wondered how it

addresses the porn issue, though I'm pretty sure it says all forms are

bad.

I understand about the cats. However, I also believe that it is because

they are animals. We are made in the image of God and therefore unique from

animals. We are accountable for our actions, thoughts, wants, needs, etc.

God intended unity between men and women, not segregation.
