DPT vaccinations put on hold

The UT Health Department has put DTP vaccinations on hold in all dispensaries, the PGI, GMSH-16 and GMCH-32. There will be no vaccinations until the investigation into the safety of

vaccine Batch 994 is completed. The vaccine has been blamed for adverse

reactions on two children.

The UT Health Dept has directed all its dispensaries as well as the PGI, GMSH-16 and GMCH-32 to immediately stop DTP immunization in the city and withhold the stock of the vaccine, Batch No 994. The decision was taken following the death of a six-week-old infant. The child, Arnav, died on February 8, a few hours after he was given the DPT Vaccine at the Ramdarbar ESI Dispensary. Investigations are on to determine whether the vaccine caused his death.

The vaccine administered to Arnav belonged to a large quantity of vaccine purchased on May 27, 2011. Two children were adversely affected by the vaccine. One was Arnav, who died and the second is Radhav, who developed seizures after being vaccinated.

However, the committee has cautioned that it is collecting information at this point and it is too early to come to a conclusion about what caused the death of these children.

Meanwhile, Ladoo Tiwari, father of the deceased infant, fears medical

part. Inquiry officer Sunil Bhalla has taken the statement of the father and the inquiry report will be released on Monday.

As reported earlier, within about an hour of being administered the vaccine, Arnav started vomiting. He was brought to Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector16 where he was declared dead. The child’s father alleges he could have been saved if doctors acted on time. He accuses the doctors of negligence.
