While parents of ASD kids are screaming about a 1%+ rate of Autism now it seems we parents of DS kids have a 18.2% rate of dual dx DS-ASD. In 1999 it was 7%. For those who are unable to attend this conference coming up it’s the first time there will be presentations on the Thursday concerning biomedical interventions for DS. Laurette Janak will present on similarities between DS and ASD biochemistry.Sherry http://www.autismone.org/sites/default/files/Laurette%20Janak.pdf DS track schedule is up. Laurette Janak has a talk about " Why DS at an Autism Conference " that includes a pdf download link: http://www.autismone.org/content/schedule-autismonegeneration-rescue-conference

Wow, that is incredible......what do they attribute the steep rise in the dual diagnosis, anyone? So, Sherry, are you coming to this conference? I hope to, but I don't have much of an excuse, it is within easy driving distance from WI.

I saw her speak in 2009...really good for Down syndrome even if your child does not have a dual diagnosis (they still have health concerns that make them more prone to it, such as mitochondria issues). If you can't go to conference, Autism 1 usually has DVDs available for purchase within a month after the conferences. By the way, the CDC announced that autism rates in the general population are at 1 in 88 now which amonuts to 1 in 54 boys, so it's past the 1% mark and in some states it's even higher.
