The Nurse Practicioner saw me instead of the doc, and we got to the subject of the 'low' values for Pred. She said that the body manufactures about 10 mg per day naturally, so my daily dose of 10 mg is right on target. There was a writeup published a few months ago that covers that. Has anybody heard of it? Dennis Thanks dennis I never knew that. Now i guess i dont have to feel bad about my 15 mgs a day hugs from PA
Guest guest
Dennis, In people with normally functioning pituitary and adrenal glands, the average amount of cortisol produced by the adrenals is approximately 10-15mg per day: http://www.pituitary.org.uk/newsletter/drugs/4-medmatters.htm What happens when you take prednisone is the body stops manufacturing it. The adrenal glands start to shrink from not being used and eventually, in long term steroid therapy, they stop manufacturing cortisol altogether. At that point, prednisone must be taken for a lifetime. Plus that the adrenals also make many other hormones, so if the adrenals shrink and become useless, other hormones are also affected. This is one reason why long term steroid use is not recommended except in some cases such as life threatening organ involvement. This also explains the additional pain when someone is trying to decrease prednisone. When first decreased, the adrenals have to " wake up " and start producing again, and sometimes there is a lag in time that it starts to produce again. The lower cortisol levels cause the additional pain. a On Mar 20, 2006, at 10:36 PM, betnden@... wrote: > I learned something today while at the Rheumy's. Guest guest
BUT ... it's important to keep in mind that 10 - 15 mg cortisol is approximately 10 - 15 mg hydrocortisone which is equivalent to 2.5 - 3.75 mg prednisone.
