Guest guest
When you see the GI , this is real important .....ask if they checked his ammonia levels . His "episodes" sound like hepatic encephlaphy and can be the cause of allot of his symptoms .If not they need to because it can be treated easily , and if it is his ammonia levels and they are high he can end up in real bad shape . GP's are pretty much worthless in the grand scheme of things but allot of insurance companies make you go through them to get to the specialists . Re: liver biopsy Hi all, I’ve been lurking for a while but wanted to introduce myself and my husband. And, we’re seeking your advice and opinions. My husband, Dennis, was diagnosed with Hep-C (type 3a) a few months ago. Dennis had Hep-A over 20 years ago. I’ve known him for 9 years and witnessed the first “episode” (as I like to call them) about 5 years ago. It was an episode of extreme lethargy, something you’d liken to hypoglycemia or diabetes. As it turns out he is pre-diabetic, but the lethargy also fits with Hep-C. From Dec 08 to March 08 he lost 45 lbs, down to 180 lbs (he’s 5’10”). The sudden weight loss and increasing episodes of lethargy resulted in 3 auto accidents in his company vehicle within a month. He was let go from his job. We bought a different vehicle and he totaled it within 4 days. The next day we went directly to the doctor – together. At that appointment I showed the doctor a video of Dennis having an episode. The doc’s response: “don’t know what to make of that.” Nothing else. He ordered a complete blood test which found Hep-C, but he never ordered the second test to see if Dennis actually had it. Long story short, Dennis has lots of appointments because he’s also doing this pain management stuff with Kaiser Permanente. I finally had a meltdown this morning and told him to put that on hold. He’s in pain management because he was diagnosed with spinal stenosis. He has had two back surgeries and they determined (before the Hep-C diagnosis) that he’s in severe pain as a result of the spinal column being squeezed due to scaring from surgeries. Personally, I don’t believe that’s what is causing the pain, although his PM doc insists that “most of the pain is NOT from Hep-C.” The PM stuff requires several appointments every week and it’s all he can do to get to them, and sit through them. And, by appointments I should really say they’re classes mixed in with an occasional consult. Today he came home with a book and workbook after being there for a 9:30 and 11:00 class (he got home at 1:00). He looked completely wiped out. His doctors have him on methadone for the pain, among other things. His liver biopsy had been scheduled for today, but he missed an appointment with Gastro (partly because he’s so overwhelmed with all the PM appts) and so the biopsy was cancelled. Not even rescheduled. Cancelled! Last week they took 11 vials of blood from him to do all these tests. It took them over 2 hours to get the blood and he was sick & throwing up all night after that. Anyway, the blood tests were supposedly going to tell all so he wouldn’t need the biopsy. He’s supposed to meet with the Gastro doc tomorrow to find out results. But PM doc had also ordered some tests and found that his testosterone levels are very low. She suggested he get shots to treat. Gastro has an MRI scheduled for next week to look at his liver, which he’s been told may mean he won’t need a biopsy. I bet you anything he will need a biopsy. I feel like I don’t believe he needs PM right now, and like they’re dragging their feet on getting the Hep-C stuff going. Seems backwards to me. His doctor told him he’d put in for disability once treatments have started, so that’s another motivator for me to get going. He’s been off work since May! We’ve had a diagnosis since the beginning of October and nothing more has been done. When they scheduled the biopsy it was because I called and SCREAMED at them to get moving. They scheduled it for a month later which also made me mad, and then cancelled it. Ugh. I feel like I know best because so far everything I’ve fought to get done has proved me right, and further proved that the doctors we’ve seen don’t know Hep-C. I suppose we’ll know a lot more after seeing the Gastro doc tomorrow and maybe I’ll calm down once I speak to someone who knows what we’re going through. But, for right now, I’m just highly irritated. Glad this group is out here. & Dennis
Guest guest
I was thinking the same thing, but keep in mind that ammonia levels are not definitive. I have been diagnosed with hep enceph, but the last time they were checked, my ammonia levels were normal. My hep specialist doesn’t even check them. Guest guest
If it isn't then they might send him for a neurology consultation or another specialist . His lethargy could even be caused by some of his pain meds you never know . Re: Re: liver biopsy> > > > When you see the GI , this is real important .....ask if theychecked his> ammonia levels . Guest guest
Hello and welcome and Dennis I can relate to your story real well. The doctors have said I have all sorts of stuff like COPD, emphizma, bi-polar, head trama, Congestive heart failure, bad back, ulcers, stomach flu, eat more fiber, fatigue syn, la te dum. Not once did they check for Hep C for the last 20 years. Finally in may? I think it was, a nurse practr ordered bloodwork that included hep C. LINK ---> janis7 and friends. Check it out, esp the symptoms page. Everything from hemmoroids to confusion to.... all linked to hep C. All linked to me. Ive gone thru needless surgerys, taken god knows how many prescriptions doing god knows what to my body and liver. Im now a 1B with 86000 viral load, but Im afraid to go to any doctor around here. I need a biopsy too to find out more, but no car, and nearest is 50 miles away. I too am angry and frustrated, not to mention scared and confused. AND alone on SSI. Keep comming here. Some of these folks are real smart. Others, experianced. Still others, just downright kind. I too am a lurker here and on Janis7, btwn combing the internet looking for....anything hep C. Dont give up. This bug has many colors but it can be beaten. love don in kansas From: S. <wendyhayahoo (DOT) com>Subject: [Hepatitis_C_ Central] Re: liver biopsyTo: Hepatitis_C_ Central@yahoogro ups.comDate: Monday, November 3, 2008, 8:51 PM Hi all, I’ve been lurking for a while but wanted to introduce myself and my husband.
