Guest guest
Amy first off, it sounds like you are doing very well!!! Quiting smoking is no easy chore and now you are getting in the habit of working out. My first suggestion would be to look at exactly what you eat. Are you eating too little maybe? Or too many fat grams? Do some research. Remember eating too little will hinder you just as much as eating too much. Next, remember that results can be slow and some of the weight you gained is likely muscle. I bulked up a bit at first and after a few months the fat started melting away leaving me with some nice defined muscles underneath. You might consider looking into meeting with a personal trainer for at least one or two sessions to help you evaluate your workout. Often you can hire a trainer and use the gym they work at without becoming a member of the gym. If that is not an option. Then examine the intensity of your workouts. Are you doing the basic in the morning followed by thirty minutes on the trainer at night? Do you think you are ready to try the advanced? If you are on the advanced can you try kicking up the intensity a notch or two? Maybe instead of the trainer at night you could try using free weights and then use the trainer when you feel like you need an extra workout or are watching tv. Weights can really help boost your metabolism. You still need aerobics but I can not sing the praises of doing a little weight training enough. ( I need to get better at it myself though) Don't give up!!!! You are doing great..really!!!! << Hi everyone! I don't know if yall remember me, I've only posted a few times but I thought I would ask you guys to see if maybe you could help. My husband and I quit smoking back in July and we thought we would step up on our excercise routine to maybe keep off any weight that comes with quitting smoking. Anyway that didn't work, well now that I have gained 12 pounds despite watching what I eat and doing Tae-bo in the morning and doing my elliptical trainer in the evening. Still nothing. I have not even lost inches. I'm getting very discouraged and don't want to give up but I feel like I'm killing my self for no reason. Don't get me wrong I love to excercise but what am I doing wrong. I eat a very balanced diet and get between 1600 and 2000 calories a day. Any advise would be very much appreciated! I wonder if you are being too hard on yourself. You don't say what you weighed before you quit smoking. Is it possible you are now at a realistic and livable weight? Remember that exercises that help you gain muscle, like taebo, may result in some healthy weight gain because of the gain in muscle. It can be a good thing, not a bad thing. What taebo tapes do you do? Are you varying your exercise routine? Our bodies get used to the same routine, leading to fewer visible results unless we vary our exercise routine. Perhaps try running or speed walking a few days instead of the eliptical machine or taebo? Do you vary the taebo tapes? That variety helps me push myself to my limits. If I did the same tape everyday, I think I would just go in slow motion. Are you doing advanced tapes? If not, maybe you are ready to " advance " to them to boost your metabolism. Have you tried weight lifting? Weight lifting is supposed to increase your metabolism as well. Hang in there. Elena
Guest guest
Amy, if you have been working out for 8 years already I would say that age is only a minor factor. It might be that your body is use to the intensity of your workout. How long have you been doing Taebo? How does it compare to the intensity of the workouts you were doing before? I really am a strong believer in shaking things up every few months with something new for a bit. Our bodies get accustomed to having a particular type of exercise almost as much as they are accustomed to going to bed at a certain time, breakfast etc. << , I do weight training every other day and alternate my advance tape and basic along with all the other workout videos I have, I'm completely stumped. I watch my fat intake too. I've been working out for about 8 yrs. time out for one pregnancy and it's always been pretty easy for me to drop the few extra pounds I wound pick up here and there. Here's two questions for you, tell me what you think.I'm 33, How much do you think age plays in this? and How do you feel about the whole carb thing? Thanks for some of the suggestions! >>
Guest guest
Amy, You mention you are eating a " balanced diet " , but what type of foods are you eating? When I am trying to lose weight, the first thing I do is increase my protein and decrease my carbohydrates, especially starchy carbs (breads, rice, potatoes, etc.). I make sure to have a protein source at each meal. I usually opt for a protein source lower in fat (i.e., chicken, egg whites, fat free cottage cheese) and try to eat better sources of carbs than breads (i.e., veggies, etc.) Are you eating a balanced meal for every meal or a balanced diet throughout the day? I'm a firm believer in eating a balanced meal at every meal. I follow Barry Sear's Zone (actually a modified version) and he recommends 40% carbs, 30% protein, and 30% fat in every meal. Also make sure to try to drink 8 8 oz. glasses of water a day. During a weight loss mode, I try never to eat more than 1500 calories per day. I usually fluctuate between 1200-1500 while I am " dieting " to get pounds off. I also increase my cardio exercise. Hope this helps some! If you'd like some recipes, etc., please feel free to email me privately. Guest guest
Maybe I should change some things around and give it a little time. I'm very impatient. I've only been doing the Eliptical trainer for about three weeks so I guess I'm just not giving it enough time Amy, Have you experimented with your diet at all? Try eating less calories or more calories and see what works!

I feel your pain LOL Seriously, I have been in your boat for almost a year now I have plenty of fat to shed but no matter what I do workout wise or foodwise, it seems as though the fat or weight is here to stay I have tried upping everything, cuttingback everything mixing up everything with no real changes I know it all stopped when I tried too hard doubling the exercise while cutting back too much on calories but no combination has restarted fat burning though my first few months saw instant results. I have resigned myself to the fact that there is a setpoint that my brain or whatever has chosen as my optimal survival weight and here I'll stay as long as I keep exercising and not overeating cuz the only way it may switch is upwards Barb who at least saves money on clothes

Amy >> Amy, Congrats to you and your hubby for kicking the smoking habit..I only quit a little over 1month ago..One of my biggest fears was also gaining weight..however, in my case it hasn't happened yet..I am very aware of what I am eating..I probably get quite a few less calories then you mentioned..not on purpose, thats just the way my day usually goes..I eat decently and I drink a protein/carb shake mid day..but I don't snack and I don't eat alot of fatty foods..anyways, I hope it stays this way..I also do Taebo along w/ Weight Training alternating days..don't worry, I know several people who quit, gained, and then lost the weight again..I know its frustrating when you aren't seeing the results you want..but quiting isn't going to produce results either..so give it some more time..you are doing good things for your body and your body will pay you back ten fold..hang in there girl... Guest guest
Amy, I understand the impatience!!! Dave has a point that your body needs a week of rest now and then in order for your muscles to get some major recovery. Maybe take a week off and ask for a personal training session for Christmas/or other holiday????? Who is asking for a plane ticket for Christmas from the DH and perfume and sweaters from the parents for Hanukkabut hasn't started her own shopping yet :-< << , I've been doing Tae-bo for almost a year now and I have the 2 four packs studio and live and I do mix it up quite a bit I absolutely love advanced studio and like everyone else I alter my work outs according to how I fell each day but love to work up a sweat. Guest guest
The thing that gets me is that I don't eat any less or any more than I used to and the pounds keep coming on, I kept my weight the same for about 6 yrs. I have a Tanita scale (the one that measures body fat) I think that's what bothers me most. That has'nt even gone down. It sounds funny to say but I just need to lose inches. Amy Who feels like throwing a pity party for herself. As if no one in the world has this problem. --- kbrost1@... wrote: > In a message dated 12/1/00 10:36:57 AM Central > Standard Time, > agurr_1999@... writes: > > << Don't get me wrong I love to excercise but what > am I doing wrong. I want to tell you a little bit about those scales that measure body fat. Tanita is probably the best home body fat scale you can buy. (I learned a lot about the things when I was working as a grad assistant...I had to coordinate the set up of the Nutrition Assessment lab at my university). But, please, please, please remember that many factors can interfere with an accurate assessment on those things. First your hydration status (that is are you dehydrated or overhydrated) will change the readings, your grip and even hand position can cause variations, too. Keep at it....I know you CAN DO THIS!!! Okay?? Keep coming back here, I'm always ready to listen and support you! One of these days, you're going to just all of sudden realize that you've made more progress than you've ever gave yourself credit for! Jen Who knows how it feels to think you're pedaling with all your might and still getting nowhere fast!

Guest guest
Jen' Thanks so much for your encouraging words. They made me feel alot better about the whole thing, I'm just going to keep up everything up as a normal routine and if it happens it happens if not well at least my body's getting the exercise it needs to be healthy. My poor hubby though, he's never had to watch his weight he's been the same weight since we got married and that was 13 yrs ago. Till we quit smoking. Life's a trade off huh? Oh' well Thanks again and I keep you informed. Amy --- jlbaldini@... wrote: > > and the pounds keep coming on, > > I kept my weight the same for about 6 yrs.
