This reminds me of the recent conversation regarding lactic acid build up

and muscle soreness. Thought I'd share a story that might help some of you,

especially the " Motivational A-Team " <G> doing the marathon.

We took our Vizsla hunting this weekend and I made very careful to look for

any signs of her getting tired since it is opening weekend. I was really

amazed at how long she went without any " obvious signs " . But then Monday

morning, she could barely move and was in a lot of pain..so another vet

visit. At least we know our vet so well, we got to do it by phone. Our

Vizsla is basically on a ketogenic diet (very minimal carbs) and not on dog

food as she is allergic. The combination of the diet and her being

" live-wired " (as in she would probably run until near death) brought on

severe muscle soreness. It hd nothing to do with being " out of shape "

cardiovascularly, which are the signs I was looking for. Basically she had

depeleted her glucose stores for energy and was using muscle. The

by-product of all this is the lactic acid, which in turn made her so sore

she couldn't move. Apparently certain breeds such as Whippets and

Greyhounds are actually known to run until the break down entire muscles.

I mention this because since many of us do " endurance " type of workouts we

might benefit from the outcome. The vet suggested changing her diet before

hunting season to include more grains but more closely related to us is that

she prescribed increasing Vit C, Calcium/Magnesium and Potassium prior to

and and after hunting. She also prescribed bringing glucose sticks to give

to her when she is out in the fields to ensure the glucose levels are high

enough not to break down the muscle.

Maybe some of this will be helpful in the future so I thought I'd pass the

info along.

Colleen, who is glad her furry-kid is finally feeling better
