Guest guest
Hi Tess, I to am looking for something to do from home, I finished work last November and I know I can't go back to doing what I was, but hey there has to be something I can still do...I feel so useless not working. Must say though my family are enjoying my presence at home as I was doing shift work . Take care MIchelle in oz [ ] OT: Work from home/med transcipt? Hi All...as some of you know, I haven't had a job for a while, and when I try, it just doesn't work. I get sick, and fall on my face, and feel crummy about myself...yet again. I am trying to think of something to do from home, and people tell me about medical transcription. But But I wonder, are there really jobs out there for medical transcriptionsists with little experience (assuming I took some courses in that)? Or is that a big bunch of hooey? Working from home is a harder prospect than what a lot of people say, I know. But I am trying to think of SOMETHING I could do, and make an income. I am an excellent typist, good speed, know quite a bit of medical terminology, creative, a good writer I am told. I am not looking to be wealthy, just not so darn poor. And besides, I just feel like I want to do SOMETHING. Any thoughts on home businesses, other than sales. (I could not sell a T Bone to a starving man : ) Love to all.... Guest guest
Hi Tess My friend, used to type reports for the insurance investigators. She also did some typing for students. Maybe you could place a small ad in a community paper. That's how my friend got her first typing job. I work for a small trucking firm from home. When there is no one in the office, they forward the phones to my line. I only I do it a couple of days a week, but every little bit helps! Good luck Very best wishes Jill
Guest guest
Tess, I had looked into medical transcription right before moving from NJ. I registered for the class and bought the book. But then we moved and I never did anything more. I was discouraged because I was told that most transcriptionists are former nurses or other medical professionals that have a good background in medicine and already are familiar with the terminology. I THOUGHT I knew a lot of medical terminology until I got the book. I've got a lot to learn. I personally don't think I have the memory skills anymore. Don't let MY thoughts sway you one way or another. According to the dept of Labor, it is an in demand job. If you take the 1-2 year course, you may do quite well. Check out the Dept of Labor: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos271.htm Have you considered working for a temp company? Many times you work filling in for people that call out sick or are on vacation. Many times temping leads to permanent work. I really enjoyed doing it when I did it in NJ. With your typing skills, you'd be a valuable asset. a On Mar 31, 2006, at 3:04 AM, Grammi B wrote: > Hi All...as some of you know, I haven't had a job for a while, and > when I try, it just doesn't work. Guest guest
Hi, I have another idea for working at home. I used to do this when I went to court reporting school. If you live near a court house you could type up transcripts or even proofread transcripts. I did it for a while to make a little extra money when I was in school. You don't have to have any degree or certificate to do it, and it usually pays well, by the page so you can work as much as you like or as little. If you are interested I can give you more info on how to get started. It can be very exciting at times. Best wishes, Holly Also where I went to school they had classes for medical transcriptionists and there was a real need down here. The hardest part of that, so I've heard, is that you may need to purchase several medical terminology books to have handy if you decide to go that route. I may still have my old ones if you want to do medical transcripts. Let me know. Jill Simon <jilsimon@...> wrote: Hi Tess My friend, used to type reports for the insurance investigators. Guest guest
I worked in a small hospital where duties overlapped, then a large hospital, which was totally opposite, where I did billing. Then I applied for a job in a government hospital as transcriptionist. In those days, early 60s paper qualifications was not necessary one just had to do the job. I was then given an interview. They gave me a dictionary, tape and a dictaphone and the supervisor stood in back of me watching. You talk about nervous...wow. Well the doctor doing the recording did not speak clearly and was difficult to understand. The report was an autopsy on a stillborn baby an area I had not been exposed to. About 3 words in I hit a word I didn't know. I as calmly as possible picked up the dictionary and found and typed the word. Another 3 or 4 words and the process was repeated and repeated. Before I had typed anywhere near as much as I have typed here to this point the supervisor stopped me. I knew I had blown it. Surprise, what he was testing me for was to see if I could find words I needed and that tape had been specially chosen for that purpose. Guest guest
Tess, I know a medical transcriptionist on my diabetes lists. She might be able to advise you on this. If you would like, I can ask her if she thinks she could help you. Guest guest
, I started my own home base business last year and it is doing wonderful. I am a Home Interiors decorating consultent. We have a wonderful new recruit offer running right now $99 start-up and you get $500 in free mechandise. It has been amazing. I have been soo busy. I do a lot of fundraisers, private parties(5 people or less), tons of book parties and internet parties. This month I am already near $1k in sales and April has not officially started yet! LOL I love it cause I work when I feel like it and on MY schedule. My kids love me being home. I have tried substitute teaching..but I have been far too sick for that. Or the names of resources. . .anything that would help people get started would be wonderful. Thanks so much! Guest guest
Hi, Holly, I'm finally getting caught up on reading my e-mails and I saw your posting re: typing and proof-reading court transcripts. I'm very interested in learning how you went about doing this, including how you got started (currently not working working due to lupus-related problems). Thanks! __________________________________________________
