Guest guest
I take Celebrex for my RA when I need it. It was the one RX that helped me. I don't believe it contributes to intestinal bleeding, but there are the heart issues that were in the news over the last year that led to the removal of Vioxx and Bextra. My cardiologist recommended (and my rheumatologist agreed) that I should take a low dose aspirin while on Celebrex to offset the cardiac problems. For the record, I take Plaquenil. I took the Celebrex for months until the Plaquenil kicked in - it is a very slow acting drug and can take months for it to help. At that time, I eliminated the Celebrex. Unfortunately, due to a neuropathy issue, I was taken off the Plaquenil for about 2 months at the beginning of this year. When the arthritic problems came back, I went back on Celebrex. I'm not back on Plaquenil and now, I'm trying to take 200 mg of Celebrex every other day instead of the 400 mg until I go off the Celebrex again. Guest guest
Hello, Rainy! It's terrible that you are falling apart. So sorry to hear about Lorette. How old was she? What other conditions did she have in addition to her RA? What other meds did she take? Celebrex (celecoxib) has never been removed, but Vioxx (rofecoxib) was withdrawn voluntarily from the market by Merck in September 2004. They are both COX-2 selective NSAIDs. The biggest safety issue with the COX-2s has been the risk of cardiovascular events. They were developed to be safer for the GI tract than nonselective NSAIDs, but, unfortunately, they too may cause GI injury. Other meds taken concurrently, even aspirin, can contribute to the risk of gastropathy with the COX-2s. I'll post some information on this over the weekend. Not an MD I'll tell you where to go! Mayo Clinic in Rochester http://www.mayoclinic.org/rochester s Hopkins Medicine http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org [ ] Celebrex & Vioxx Hello to all my friends. Hello to all those who don't know me. I joined this list back in, I think it was 2000. I am still alive and ticking, however, when I get my pulse taken, they can't find it in my wrist anymore! That one makes for good jokes when it comes to going to the doctor! I just redirect them to my neck. How am I? Let's just leave it at this today, my body is falling apart. I am working on repairs. But I am keeping a strong attitude and keep on pushing forward. That is all we can do, right? This spring marks 24 years when I first noticed my right knee swollen while I was in PE in the 7th grade. I was 13 years old. I can't believe how long it has been! I am looking for some info and personal experience on these two drugs. Recently a friend of mine died, my ex-boyfriends grandmother. I am very close with his mother, boyfriend and I were together 14 years, so she has asked me for help on research. After Lorette died, my friend discovered that one of the health problems her mother was suffering from was intestinal bleeding. Two of the drugs she had taken previously were Celebrex and Vioxx. I don't know for how long Lorette had taken them. But she took them for RA and some really bad back pain. I remember at the time when this all came out and they took them off the shelf and mentioned this to my boyfriend and his mother at the time bcs it concerned me. I am actually not surprised for my friend to be asking for help on research now. Does anyone have any previous experience with this? Or does anyone have any really great site that would help me? How is everyone? ? a? Me-Mom? I love you all! RainySue
Guest guest
Hi ! How are you?? And thank you for your help. I knew I could count on you! I have been one of those very quiet and lurking members for quite some time now. But I am here, I just blend in with the wallpaper! Hmm, last November Lorette had a heart attack, but didn't know it. Her daughter took her to the ER about 3 days after the attack bcs she didn't look right. Her daughter found a huge bruise on her back and Lorette said that she had fallen, tripped over the cat. We knew that wasn't entirely true once we found out abt the heart attack. Apparently it must have been very mild. She left us in January, she was 86. In fact, she left us on the 19th. My anniversary with her grandson - we were together 14 years. I don't know of any other meds at this time or even how long she had taken those others. I am waiting now for more info. Except, I think she was taking prednisone, but she only took like 2 or 3 mg when she took that. I don't think she took it all the time. I did find Celebrex has a rare side effect that includes intestinal bleeding: http://www.healthsquare.com/newrx/CEL1078.HTM Thank you, ! ~RainySue --------------------------------- Messenger with Voice.
