Your rheumy has you on 20 mg of prednisone and then tells you to lose

weight? Doesn't he know that prednisone makes you gain weight? Or is he

weaning you off the prednisone?

The exercise I do is riding the exercise bike. It helped me to lose

weight five or six years ago. I also changed my eating habits. I have

diabetes and therefore have to limit carbs, but I think that limiting

carbs is also a good way to lose weight--especially if you're still on

prednisone because it seriously raises blood sugars.

Hi Holly,

I walk as much as I can. I think it is easy on the joints. One think I

do is always have good walking shoes. Good shoes are very important. I

walk as often as time allows. It is hard at first but you can get use to

it. Try to stay away from hills and places were you have to step up. If you

can walk a flat surface it actually gets easy. My sister walks in the mall.

She has been walking for about six months and has lost 25 pounds. You need

to start out slow and very short walks. Don't try to push it or your joints

will tell you about it for sure.

Good luck,

Lynn

Hi Holly,

I'm not on any meds yet, so the pain and flares are bad, but I try to walk on

the tred mill for as long as I can and use the ab lounge. As for diet, watch

your calories and fat intake. I try to keep my cal under 1200 a day anf fat

under 30g. This seems to work for me, but it takes longer for me because I

can't work out as much as I would like to. Good luck.

I am interested to know if the ab lounger is working for you? I have

thought about buying one, but not sure if I could use it because of my

i do yoga and absolutely love it. you can take classes or do it at home

with video tapes (i can recommend some good ones if you want). it's all

stretching and core energy and although it shows greyt results, it's

easier on the body than most other forms of exercise. i also walk in

the morning with my boys but that's more so i can show them off than

for any other reason <g>

I don't know where you live, but here the public television station-has a

program called sit and be fit. Gentle exercises that can be done sitting or

standing, my rheumy recommends it. in WI

i think there's something like that on a local station in l.a. too

but it's at the crack of dawn (maybe even before) and i do prefer to

be awake and somewhat coherent before attempting any exercises <g>

I also like Austin's Lite and Be Fit - it's on Lifetime in

the mornings but I DVR it. She has pretty backgrounds and the first

half hour is mroe relaxed and gentler and then the second program

incorporates more aerobic/core exercises. Good for those days you

can't work out and want to go light esp the first half. I find it

more relaxing than anything. Yoga bothers my wrists so until I get

my strength up - I've done less of it.

Another note: I'm not into diets but after having 2 kids I was

frustrated by those last stubborn pounds that are hard to get rid

of, plus the fatigue and pain on my joints was wearing me down. 2

moms from my playgroup swore by this book, " Fat Flush Plan " and

actually lost a lot of weight. I was very sceptical but it's a very

good read about the body, what's needed and why. The author writes

about detoxifying the body, rejuvenating the liver and basically

jump starting your liver and kidneys to rev up your metabolism to

start the weight loss process. As soon as I found out I had RA, I

took one look at my kids and bought this book. Needless to say, I

lost 10 pounds in 2 weeks. You def need to be motivated but this

wasn't just a diet. The book is filled with recipes and

descriptions about certain spices/vegetables/fruits and herbs that

are really beneficial to your health. There are particular spices

and herbs that can help with inflammation, boost immunity, reduce

cholesterol and decrease water retention to name a few. I even went

to Amazon and checked out the reviews and was very impressed with

what I saw (including ones who had arthritis). My cooking already

incorporated alot of the spices I use (i.e. garlic, coriander, cumin

etc.) but to know the health benefits and to really experiment with

more vegetables really did wonders for me. It boosted my immunity,

helped me lose weight and gave me more energy (although at first it

doesn't since you can't do carbs). But now I make healthier food

choices. It's easy to say but this lifestyle plan really made me do

it and again I've never dieted b/c I hate the idea of depriving

yourself or starving and then dealing with weight fluctuations,

cravings etc. I know this sounds like an endorsement but I just

wanted to share what I've done only b/c it worked on the biggest

skeptic out there. There are some caveats and I'd be happy to

address if anyone is interested.

As for exercise, I think many covered this area already with good

advice on walking, water therapy, yoga etc.

Hope this helps!

Smita

Janet,

Glad it's working for you. I am thinking about getting a treadmill,

and start out slow, so I might get an ab

lounge too. Thanks, Tawny
