Guest guest
I also played around with my Prednisone dosage. Thankfully I was never on more than 10 mg a day, with an occasional increase to 15, for a flair. I was talking with my sister last night and she said you should never stop prednisone without weaning (which we know) however, the real danger is if you are on a high dosage, over 50 mg. At that dosage the adrenal gland stops producing normally and the prednisone takes over for it. If you stop cold or don't wean off slowly enough you can cause damage to your kidneys. After weaning the adrenal gland begins to work on it's own again. My sister has had Lupus for many years and at one time was on 80 mg of Pred a day, she was very active in her care and learned as much as she could about the disease and it's treatment, now she takes nothing and has not had a flare for years. Guest guest
Patsy, Oh my, I can't imagine taking that high of a dosage. My daughter sometimes has to take high doses for her asthma. But it makes her very hyper.\ My boss also has or had lupus and now she is in remission I guess they call it. The other day though she was asking me who my rheumatologist was because her knees are bothering her and her GP said she needed to reestablish a relationship with an RA. Guest guest
Pat: I was also diagnosed with MS just before Christmas of last year. The Neuro I was seeing prescribed me 2500mg of Prednisone a day for 10 days, and that was it. I questioned her about tapering, and that I had RA and would flare, etc. - but she said it was going to be fine. Well, STUPID ME. I knew better. Not only did the 2500mg of Prednisone NOT help my MS relapse, when I was finished the 10 day treatment, I then had the worst RA flare of my life. I started back on my 10mg dose of Prednisone, but after your body has as much as I had, it does not respond to the 10mg! It was a long and painful flare, to say the least. I have since fired that Neuro, and am being assigned a new one soon. Taper whenever you are on this drug no matter how much you are increasing it. I became so ill from it that I should have been hospitalized, but was too stubborn to leave my kids at Christmas time. Best of luck, in Calgary, Canada PS - on that high of a dose, I gained 25 pounds by day 5!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guest guest
Usually the mega predisone is given by an IV and then with a follow-up of consistent blood sugar tests. Guest guest
Geoff, You have a beautiful website with the well written web page <http://www.healingyou.org/prednisone.html>www.healingyou.org/prednisone.html on the topic of Prednisone weaning. The following web page is also very informative and well written: www.sarcinfo.com/weaning.htm. That page addresses Prednisone weaning in context of the disease sarcoidosis. In January of this year, I was able to wean myself off Prednisone after one year for polymyalgia rheumatica. Starting at 10 mg per day, I was instructed to drop 1 mg every three weeks at first and 1/2 mg every three weeks at the end. I went slower than instructed, with lengthy plateaus for vacations and setbacks. I think that the key is not to go any faster than indicated by the gradual healing of the body, which is helped along by the Prednisone. I am now off Prednisone completely, but my symptoms are not totally gone. My body gives be plenty of symptoms two days before rainstorms, and I sometimes look longingly at my remaining 1 mg Prednisone pills. I have resisted them so far. Sincerely, Harald
Guest guest
If you can stay away from pred. for a while, it would be good. I stayed on it too long and now the endocrinologist said I must stay on 5 mg. forever if i want to live. I am down to 5mg. I have had severe osteoporosis and have to take Forteo. (that bad) The Cushings has improved, some of the visible side effects are still with me.
