To avoid gaining weight, do not change your eating habits. It really takes not tuning into your appetite! Pris
Guest guest
I was taking 2.5 mg of prednisone along with humira. Then the humira stopped being so effective and I had to raise the prednisone to 10mg / day. Although I'm not pain free, it does make the swelling go down a bit and gives me more energy. Also, it helps my asthma. As for the weight gain, Pris said it best. It makes food taste better. Recently, I was on a burst of prednisone, 50mg tapering down, for 3 weeks and I thought I was just turning into a good cook!! Gained 10 pounds in those weeks because I didn't control my portions and I never stopped eating. I do have avascular necrosis in my ankle due to the long term use of steroids and get my blood tested every 6 weeks. To sum it up, in my humble opinion or IMHO as the kids would say, I will not stop the prednisone unless I absolutely have to. It has been the only drug that actually works all the time and over the 20 some years of meds, that says a lot. Best wishes to all, Joanne > This is my 2 cents, prednisone does not make you heavier, it just makes > food > taste better. > To avoid gaining weight, do not change your eating habits. Guest guest
I asked my dr if I would lose weight now that I'm almost off the Pred. She said, " only if you stop eating as much. Prednisone does not cause weight gain, it causes increased appetite. Make better food choices and you will lose weight " . HA! Easy for her to say when you are hungry 24/7. Guest guest
Hi, I was put on prednisolone months ago now, I know it hasnt been that long, but I've only just been diagnosed!! My dr said that he didnt really know what to do, i'm sero negative and he didnt want to make anything worse with dmards, if i didnt actually have RA, I now know that I do have RA and i'm on 4 x Sulfasalazine daily, with the Prednisolone and pain killers. I havn't gained any weight with it, it's been a life saver for me. I could hardly walk before, and getting out of bed was almost impossible. Now, most days anyway, I can walk so much better, I can go shopping with my boyfriend, and I can go to all my lectures and get up stairs!! I don't even have an increased appetite, I'm writing this so I don't have to eat my breakfast so soon!! It won't take away the pain completely, but it does help a lot, and weight gain isn't always an issue. It really depends on the person taking it. Sorry for writing so much (my breakfast is cold now!!) Emma > > My first doctor never gave me any steroids, or anything for pain for > that matter. She was too busy changing the dmard every 2 months! Guest guest
Hi Emma, my story is very similar to yours. I am sera negative, and my doc, put me on pred. immediately as I had sudden onset RA and could hardly walk when I went to see him. That was in July and I have been on Pred. ever since and only offically diagnoised about a month ago. I have actually lost weight, (mainly from cutting alcohol from my diet, I wasn't wa huge drinker, but did have one or two drinks most days). I am now on Plaquenil, with pred for another month until the Plaquenil starts to work, am hoping the I do not have to add MTX into the mix for relief, because the pain is just bearable now. You sound like you're young and active, I thought I was young until this happened (i'm 40, but mostly feel 80 nowdays), but I am still active as I have a young family, a part-time job and run two small businessess from home. Perhaps that's they key to not putting on weight. I did notice a huge increase in my appetite though. Hope all is well at your house. Pennie [ ] Re: Steroids... Guest guest
~If you are referring to steroids used primarily for MS, most usually it is Solumedrol with a prednisone taper--at least that is what i've had twice within the last 4 months or so. In general these and I do believe most other steroids do a variety of things. First off, they are major anti-inflammatories, so they get to the chase of helping with an MS flare, but : greatly raise blood sugar, increase appetite and weight, thin out bone and enormously affect mood. This third flare I just experienced in Nov., my neuro and I agreed no steroids this time. If you 'google' search steroids or using steroids for MS you will find a great deal of information. blessings, kate [low dose naltrexone] steroids...low dose naltrexone > Hi Everyone,> I was asked about taking steroids and remember it being > brought up here once (a while back).
