Guest guest
Hi everyone, I am new to this group thanks to my referal from Edith. My question is: Is there any correlation between learning disorders like ADD and BPD? Are the learning disorders brought on by the stress of the BP parent? Or can a BP also have ADD or other learning disorders? If anyone can give me more information on this topic I would truly appreciate it. They're two separate entities. There's an interesting book by Gabor Mate, MD called " Scattered " and there are 5 chapters online that you can read at: http://www.scatteredminds.com/about.htm or http://www.scatteredminds.com/book.htm Cheers, Edith
Guest guest
Hi Toedo, and welcome to ModOasis. I don't have ADD, but my brother does, and I think my husband does. I purchased the book Scattered Minds (see Edith's links) and found it to be very helpful. I believe that ADD is a neurochemical problem (e.g., it's not something you can just " get over " ), but Mate offers some interesting theories on how and why ADD comes about. They might shed some light on your questions regarding whether ADD can be caused by the stress of a BP parent or not. You don't give too much info (e.g., do you have ADD? Or do you think your BP parent does? Or both?), but we recently discussed how having ADD and being a KO (Kid Of a BP) can be difficult. Most KOs have difficulty with boundaries (our BP parent never taught us how to have boundaries -- in fact, they *discouraged* them). Not having boundaries makes it hard to say " No " , and when you can't say " No " to someone, you often end up with 50 projects on your plate at one time. If you have ADD, this can make your head spin (well, even if you don't have ADD, it would probably make your head spin!). The point being, having strong boundaries and the ability to say " No " (something KOs tend to struggle with), might help make the life of someone with ADD a little simpler. Also, BPs have very poor boundaries, so if someone has BPD and ADD, the BPD probably exacerbates the ADD. My 2 cents. I hope it helps!
