Guest guest
Hello, I have had a progressive mouth sore issue that started with blisters on the roof of my mouth, then peeling skin in my mouth, then sores in the back of my mouth by my throat and my gums and now my tongue and lips are so sore I have difficulty eating at all. I take prednisone 12.5 daily, methotrexate 25mg weekly, folic acid 2mg daily and Remincade infusions every 6 weeks. I am wondering if anyone found a mouthwash or lip balm that helps clear the sores? I tried regular Listerine and it burns like the dickens. Any ideas for me? in St. Louis RA/Lupus/DDD/osteoporosis
Guest guest
Hi! I had that problem when I was on Methotrexate and predisone, I had holes in my tongue,on both sides, Doctor told me it was from the mtx. and when he discontinued the med it cleared up and went away. I would suggest you call your Doctor and show him/her what is going on. I would not keep putting it off. Best of luck and I hope you feel better real soon. Guest guest
I'm following this thread with great interest because I started Methotrexate last week via injection and this week, I have two tiny abrasion like sores on either side of my mouth. I have a dental appointment Friday and will ask if there is a mouthwash to help.
Guest guest
Hi Paige, What kind of sores are they? I had cold sores on my mouth a year ago. My doctor told me to use potassium glucante (sp?). It is a mouthwash but he told me to dip a Qtip in the mouthwash and dab it on my sores. They went away after a few days of trying that. Guest guest
, So sorry you are experiencing this. I went through something similar a couple of years ago, but I was only on NSAIDs at the time and had just finished a course of antibiotics. I had ulcers in my mouth (all over), in my nose, and my lips were so red that they looked bloody. The whole inside of my mouth peeled off and so did the skin on my lips. Nobody - internist, dentist, endodontist - could figure out exactly what was going on. I also developed a strange rash on one of my shins during that period (a little longer than two weeks). The physician prescribed a lidocaine solution for the pain. I also used an OTC analgesic spray and Biotene mouthwash. These didn't really speed the healing, but they helped a lot with the pain. Is one of your physicians helping you with this? Not an MD I'll tell you where to go! Guest guest
My Rheumy gave me a prescription for 'Gross Cocktail' to fix sores in my mouth in case I get them. I had been having trouble with my tongue being sore and swollen, and was advised on this board to increase my Folic Acid. I went from 1mg/day to 5mg/day after asking the Rummy that was (mis)treating me, raising my MTX to 1.2cc. My tongue still doesn't want to work all the time, but it's now a lot better and I stabilized at 3mg/day. I still haven't tried the Gross Cocktail. Just the name makes me wonder. Guest guest
Dear , I just recently (August) came down with RA and am on metrotrexate 3 pills (7 1/2) a week plus had two doses of Remicade infusion take 2,400 mg of Folic acid and Calcium with Vitamin D. Plus 2 200 Celebrex a day. I feel worse than beore the treatment. I ache all over my fingers throb and wrists knees are killing me and I have something wrong with my shoulder. I had a MRI and go for physical therapy for that but after the little sessions and the next day I have to take a 20 mg. Prednisone to get out of bed. Something is wrong with the Rotator Cuff in my shoulder. I only get 3 vials of Remicade and weigh about 180, so maybe that is the reason I'm not getting better. how large a dose of Remicade do you take? How much of the Metrotrexate. Sorry to bother you with this my RF was 111, is that high? Sincerely, Bunny

She said they are typical ulcers seen with the methotrexate and steroid. I asked why I would get them now and she said the fact that I just got over being sick for a month (upper respiratory) may have had an impact. Treatment wise she said to use baby teething medicines and move warm salt water around in my mouth every two hours. She prefers not to use other medicines unless things get worse. So, that is what I am trying. I have to admit that at first I thought the warm salt water thing was just a way to make me feel like I was doing something but she said it changes the ph in your mouth which changes what can thrive in there. (If I understood her right). Thank you all for your ideas and suggestions. I'll let you know what happens. Guest guest
My doctor calls this a GI cocktail and prescribes it for my stomach. It really does help, although the taste isn't great. I mixed a little diet sprite in to take the edge off. > > The gross cocktail is called Magic Mouthwash. It is frequently used by > cancer patients on chemo that have issues with mouth sores.
