Also using acholol free hair products will help. There are several all natural

line available now. When washing hair be sure to pat it dry not rub. I found out

these tips when a good friend had cancer. He did have some thinning of hair, but

did not lose it all when he had chemo. A good friend who is a hairdresser told

us these tips and they did help.

increased the dosage to 12.5 mg, in an effort to stop the hair loss, he upped

the dosage of folic acid to 2 mg/day - except on the day she takes her MTX.

However, her hair continues to fall out. Now the dosage of MTX has been raised

to 15 mg, and the fatigue she experiences for 48 hours after the injection is

terrible. My question: does anyone else who takes folic acid not do so on the

day when medication is taken? I imagine the Dr. is concerned about the folic

acid interfering with the efficacy of the MTX, but I've read that it doesn't.

Also, do many of you also experience hair loss from MTX?

My rheumatologist said to increase my folic acid the day before, the

day of, and the day after I take MTX. Nice thick head of hair here

after 2 years on MTX.

When I was on mtx, my doctor told me not to take the FA on the day I

take the mtx. But, I heard from so many people, that it didn't

really matter. So, I would take it every day. I did have hair loss,

but not a lot. I'm sorry she is having so much fatigue. Let her

doctor know, there might be some type of med to help with fatigue,

worth a try, Tawny

I, too, had trouble with my hair failing out when I started mtx, even

though it was a fairly lose dose taken orally. Folic acide didn't

seem to help, so my rheumy gave me another med - Leucovorin - which I

take the morning after I take the mtx. It works great, no more hair

loss even when he upped the mtx dosage.

Hello

When I was on Methotrexate I took 5 mg of folic acid every day for for five

years and my hair still fell out. Even though I quit taking the Methotrexate

four months ago, my hair doesn't show any signs of improvement :(

Best wishes

Jill

Just a couple days ago my rheumy informed me that

I shouldnt be taking folic acid on the days I take my

methotrexate. I some how missed this info the first

time she told me. She said 90% of people over-look

that detail. It's not harmful to take the folic acid

that day, it just blunts the effect of the mtx a

little bit (which I guess ultimatly is harmful,

right?) SO far so good with my hair...and it'd better

stay that way cause I wasnt blessed with the thickest

hair in the world to begin with! Good luck to your

mom. You sound like a caring son.

Dear ,

I am new to RA, but am also taking MTX and folic acid. I take 15 mg of MTX a

week ( orally) and also take 1200 mcg of folic acid DAILY. Even on the days I

take the MTX. I was having stomach problems and fatigue until I increased my

folic acid from 800 to 1200 mcg a day. All of the side effects from the MTX

seemed to be far more tolerable with the small increase in folic acid. Not sure

if this helps or not, but at least you have some more info. I would suggest that

you talk to the dr about possibly increasing the folic acid or at least taking

it every day. Best of luck, Peggy
