Guest guest
I'm new to all this. What is MTX? [Editor's Note: MTX is the group's short-hand for Methotrexate, a potent drug used in treating cancer (in chemotherapy), which also has applications in auto-immune disorders including RA (rheumatoid arthritis) and PA (psoriatic arthritis). You will also run across NSAIDs (non-Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs--generally, prescription analogues of aspirin), and DMARDs (disease-modifying anti rheumatic drugs), rheumy (rheumatologist), dermy (dermatologist), MS (morphine sulfate--or, of course, multiple sclerosis), and a number of other you can usually puzzle out after seeing them used in enough sentences. Guest guest
One more question if you don't mind. I take methotrexate and I find that I have to take Aleve when I swell. Is this normal? He is talking about putting me on Plaquenil as well at the end of August because at one point he raised my MTX and it made my heart race and my anxiety was unbearable. Does this inflammation ever get under control? This all started in October and I started meds in February. Some days I just cry because I worry this will never get better. Thank God I don't have joint damage yet. They just did hand/wrist x- rays.
Guest guest
Hi : That is great that you don't have any arthritic changes on your x-rays. The doctors will often add another DMARD to one that is already working, but not well enough, and the combo makes a great difference sometimes. I was on Plaquenil when first dx and it helped me for almost 2-1/2 years. It gave me no probems at all. The Aleve is for pain and inflammation. Methotrexate is a DMARD, a disease modifying drug, and does not necessarily help with the pain, although getting the disease under control can help with that too. It sounds like your disease is not controlled yet if your doctor is thinking of adding another med. Are you on any anti-inflammatory? I am sure you know about taking folic acid with Mtx. I am sorry that you are still in pain, and, believe me, we have all been where you are now. It is a very frustrating and scary disease to have, and it is hard sometimes to get the right medications to help. Try to be patient (hard to be when you are in pain, I know)your RA is new yet. I hope your doctor can prescribe the right meds for you, and that your pain and inflammation come under control soon.
