My ankle could be hurting a little, and then when I'm walking for no apparent reason I get a sudden sharp pain there. It only lasts a few seconds and then the pain is back down to the normal level again. I haven't had this happen in probably about a month now. When it was happening, it lasted for three or four days. Hopefully your neck pain will go away as well! dordale
Guest guest
Hi Lynda, Have you had an MRI yet? I have a bulging disc in my neck, but I also have bone spurs. Neither of these showed up on an x-ray. When my neck muscles tense, the bone spurs sometimes poke nerves. It can be extremely painful. Guest guest
For quite a few years, I had to use a Cervical Traction Device regularly because of spurs and bulging discs. It would make my legs so weak that I couldn't walk. About 20 minutes of 12-15# three times in one day would make it better until the next time. I don't have to do it as often now, it's boring. Guest guest
Hi Lynda, My diagnosis is dermatomyositis. But I know exactly what you are talking about with the sudden neck pain triggered by almost nothing. Infrequently, I have had severe pain attacks that last just a few moments in my neck and also in the sole of my left foot. I also get pain attacks that last 2-3 days that are also sharp pain, although not quite as sharp. One of these prevented me from driving because I could not turn my neck, another was in my left ankle and caused my doc to give me crutches for a couple days although we could not find the cause. I had another in my right upper arm that made it so I had to lift my one arm with the other one to turn my car keys i the ignition, and one in my lower back that caused me to need a wheelchair to carry my laptop in the airport on my way to a business trip. The pain disappears with little to no recovery period!!!! This was going on for a couple years before I was diagnosed with DM. It's not a symptom of dermatmyositis and is just plain mystifying to any gp and so far to my rheumatologist. She feels she would need to see me in the middle of an attack and that has not occurred yet. I posted about them once here, I think and in a couple other groups. I think I called it something like " sudden sharp pain with no triggers " . Haven't gotten any answers yet. One bright note is that this issue has lessened although not disappeared since I have been on a tricyclic antidepressant. It was prescribed to me for neuropathic pain (another use of these drugs) and once I got up to 50 mg a day, it began ,lessening (although not eliminating) neuropathic pain and definitely decreasing the frequency and severity of the sudden sharp pain attacks and also headaches. At first I got put out because I thought my doc put me on an anitdepressant for depression without being straight with me about it. Not that I deny that this whole thing could get me depressed, but I did not like anyone being indirect like that. The drug was imipramine, and when I went home and Googled just the name of the drug rather than the drug category, I came up with only its use as an anitdepressant. When I approached my gp aboput this with good humor and calmly a couple weeks later, he just as calmly Googled the tricyclic antidepressant category right in front of me to show me their lesser known use for neuropathic pain! Well shut my mouth!! Sincerely, " Which would you rather: To be right alone or to solve a problem together? " - Anonymous > > Hi all, > I feel like I've been quite a freeloader. Guest guest
It sounds like it could be a muscle spasm. When your neck already hurts sometimes you hold it more stiff or tense and get a spasm. When I had mine it felt like that shaprp pain on movement. They can check on an xray. If so, physical therapy (especially the ultrasound and massage part) do wonders. Good luck figuring it out.
