Aren't we old enough or mature enough to discuss any topic reasonably and peacefully? If we can take crucial decisions regarding life and death, can't we logically discuss whether God exists or not? However, for all those who joined in late, I would request you to read the mails of about 3 years ago, to realize how dangerous and unruly these topics had become. These mails are on record and you only have to go to the yahoogroups pages to read them all. Discussion of Politics starts off with someone sending a mail about some political stance, either supporting or opposing it. Then some one else states a contradictory opinion. Then a strongly worded rebuttal appears. Ultimately, someone says that the other person is an agent of so and so party and such people should be deported to Pakistan, or some similar sentiment. In fact, I have censored some of the filthiest mails, which would make anyone blush. A similar thing happens in religion. It starts peacefully enough. Someone states that to attain peace of mind, one must recite a particular mantra or name 500 times a day. Press delete button if you do not agree, you say? Fine. However, then as it is a mail in the public domain, some one else replies that it is idiotic to rely on something which has no evidence. To which the first person says that some things can never be proved because they are beyond your (snigger) mundane science. To which others say that that this is illogical. Then the pro religion guy says that saying anything against God is like abusing his mother or father. Someone else replies that our parents and forefathers were no fools. Then others add that fools is exactly who they were. Spirituality, without religion, is like a headless man. The trouble starts when you get bombarded with 9 or 10 mails saying the same inane things in different words. Thus, when you open the mail box to refresh yourself with a little bit of nostalgia from the past, all you get is (what you think is) garbage, but which are actually pearls of wisdom according to some Swamiji or the other on our mail group. In this general melee, the real purpose of our egroup is lost, in fact antagonized. This group was mainly created to foster togetherness and belonging to our Alma Mater. However, all these mails create is bitterness and bad feelings about one another. Some argue that just jokes and entertainment are mindless and unintellectual. Maybe. However, I have not seen bitterness erupt in a reply to a joke on our group yet. (Fortunately, our jokes are innocuous, even if a bit risqué, at times.) Thus, I am faced with a very difficult decision. Do we allow all mails and face the risk of bitterness and unnecessary fights? Or should we lower our intellectual level and just keep entertainment and jokes as the mainstay? There is no problem with reminisinces from the past or news on achievements by members (including childbirth / Marriage and Nirvana). At my age (should I say advanced or senile?), I prefer peace to angry mails any day. And this is not only my opinion, but that of the majority who write here and have opined previously. As for the silent majority, if they prefer to remain silent, they have to take what is dished out without complaining. However, times may have changed and opinions may have been modified. So I would like to hear from all of you on this topic to decide the future course that our egroup will take. Guest guest
Hi Murtaza, I think Ameet has covered most of the points. I was delighted to see my friend Kaustubh Patil 1976 batch in the team. Invariably, during his Sevagram stint, his name was constantly mispronounced as Kasturba Patil. Please convey to him my regards. I have just one extra point. Your web page is too long, so to see the entire page, one has to scroll downwards. I personally like simple pages like Google's home page, which is short, sweet and to the point. Putting too many or too heavy Flash movies on the first page is not a good idea since many people use dial up internet and not broad band. Slow download puts off people. Like Ameet has mentioned, the details of the conference are not accessible on your page. All the best.
