I don't post often but I read your post which are most helpful and

informative.

I have a question regarding MTX shots.

Does anyone go to their doctor's office to get your MTX shot or does your

doctor write you a prescription and you give yourself a shot? My RA doctor

said I will have to come in to her office to get my shot because the MTX shot

prescription you get filled at your pharmacy doesn't have any preservatives in

them. Therefore it would be to costly for me so she wants me to come in to

get my shot unless I can find a place I can get the MTX shot with

preservatives.

Is anyone able to get their MTX shots with preservatives?

I was diagnosed with RA in September '03 and diagnosed with Fibro in Oct

'04. Currently I am taking Remicade for RA and doctor started me on MTX shots

this past Friday. I had to wait an hour to get my shot and if I have to do

this every week it will put a hardship on me with my job. My doctor said if I

can find somewhere that I can get a MTX prescription filled with

preservatives she will write me a prescription. She said currently there is a

place in

Florida but they will only give the shots with preservatives to doctors not

patients.

Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

It's been a long time since I've had MTX with preservatives, and I've never

been given a shot of MTX; I do it myself. Right now, I'm taking 100 cc per

week from a 2 cc vial. I've had absolutely no problems with it. Doctor's

orders are to take 1.2 cc and throw the rest away. Being the cheapskate I

am, I don't like to throw perfectly good items away, so I reduced the amount

I take so there's no leftovers. All my doctors know this but none are

concerned with it. I also stretch the cost at the same time. My bottles are

good through 2007, so they should be okay for a week with that little hole I

punch in it the first time.

I give myself injections at home, I get my Rx filled through tele-

drug, the mail order that my insurance uses. I have cigna. They

are small vials that I usually get 2.5, 1cc doses from each vial.

It has a preservative in it. I get a twelve week supply. Cassy

I do my own Mtx shots at home. According to the information that

came from the pharmacy, the injectable solution I get does not even

need to be refrigerated. I have been told that some people buy the

injectable stuff and drink their dose rather than taking the pills

because it is even less expensive than the pills. (which aren't

expensive either)

What your doc is saying doesn't make any sense to me. What

facilities do they have at the doctor's office to keep the

Mtx " fresh " that you don't have at home? If it needed to be

refrigerated, you could handle that... those of us on biologics have

to keep those refrigerated. If it needed to be mixed just prior to

injection, there is no reason you couldn't learn to do that too.

.... But, as I said, mine doesn't need either. You can also find

instructions for self-injecting Mtx on the internet, so I'm sure

there are lots of people doing it.

I wasn't even told to throw the rest away... When there is not

enough in the vial for a full dose, I just take what I can out of

the open one and then get the rest out of a new one. Since we are

still fiddling with doses, it's hard to plan exactly how many vials

I'll need for a month. When doctors order injectable meds, they

usually do not get them in single dose vials... They have to draw up

the proper amount for each injection.

I wasn't told to do this, but just to make sure the top of the vial

stays clean, I keep the open vial inside an empty pill bottle. I

also make sure I wipe the rubber stopper with alcohol before

inserting the needle.

The only change I've made to the routine on my own is that I find

that if I have to draw solution from two separate vials, by the time

I go to inject myself the needle has become dull enough to be

uncomfortable and leave a bruise. So if I need to withdraw from

more than one vial, I use one needle to draw up the meds, then

change to a new needle to inject myself. Since the needles come 200

to a box, I figure I can spare a few extra!<g>
