I do a bit of Drag racing, and have raced off-and-on since the mid-60's. I

don't like going in circles because I never get anywhere. I end up where I

started every time. ;) I was the pit crew for a circle track racer in the

60's and every week I had to replace the front right suspension and wheel

because he hit the wall. I also saw a picture of me on a hot lap where I was

on one wheel coming out of a turn. I like at least 2 wheels on the ground.

My wife and I are talking about trying some autocrossing before I get too

old. I used to do that, but with a big heavy car and it wasn't too much fun.

This is a hobby to keep me busy and help give me a reason to get out of bed

in the mornings. That's important for all of us with pain and stiffness.

Each of us has to have a reason.

i was walking 4 miles a day in the woods with my 2 dogs when my r.a. symptoms

started. i felt like i had " stone bruises " on the balls of my feet, as often we

get into some briars and rocky areas walking. i'm down to 2 miles a day and it

is really depressing but i make myself go, even if i'm slower getting done. my

fatigue is worse and the weakness, too. i've also gotten so clumsy it seems.

my hands definitely don't work as well, i fumble with everything and seems am

constantly dropping everything i pick up. we have to keep going somehow and

encouraging each other here helps!

I am into Drag racing, too, but I think mine might be a little

different than what you mean; every time I try to race everything in

my body drags....

One of the most effective medicines is a thing called adrenaline! When we

are feeling our worst, it can bring us back and actually give a boost. It's

like when I get on the trike. I don't feel like riding, but within a mile of

fresh air, I start feeling better. That's something we can all benefit from.

I'll have to add this 'diagnosis' to my list. It's a good one!

I use MBT shoes. They saved my walking ability, and took all the

stress off my knees, ankles, etc. I quit needing orthotics for heel

spurs even with these things. You can google them. I have 2 pair and

love them. They make hiking boots too.

Glad to hear someone else doesn't like going in circles! I haven't been

out to the track in over a year. I sold my Firehawk last year, I miss

it. I won my first race (major luck) the first time I had it at Sealy. My

husband is trying to sell his project car, but that doesn't seem to be

happening. My husband has turned wrenches on drag cars since he was 14.

Keep turning those wrenches.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been trying to catch up on the older posts, and I can't believe I

missed this one! I got hooked on racing about 8 years ago, shortly after I

bought my first Porsche. I tried autocrossing, but the courses where too

short, and I never could get them learned before the weekend was over. A

friend talked me into trying road courses, and I loved it. I'd been doing a

lot of high speed Driver's Ed weekends at various tracks (collecting tracks

around the country, such as Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen, Mid Ohio and Road

Atlanta) but considered Buttonwillow and Willow Springs in CA as my home

tracks. I did the three-day open wheel school at Laguna, what a rush! I

even bought a dedicated track car, an '84 924s Porsche whose previous owner

held a lot of Porsche Owners Club track records with it. I was planning to

start by time trialing at Willow Springs when I had my accident on the way

to one last tune-up weekend at Sears Point, got hit on a rainy night by a

Dodge Ram pickup without any headlights. End of my car, end of my racing

career, messed up knee and shoulder, and trigger point for all the

auto-immune stuff. I still have the Boxster, complete with racing

harnesses, but can't drive it because the clutch causes sharp pains in my

knee. I keep hoping to get things under control and get back out, but I

really think that is a dream. The car will go to my daughter as a present

when she graduates from college in June (she did several track weekends with

me, and did a course at Bondurant in Phoenix).

I was also lucky enough to get to be crew for an NHRA top fuel drag racer

right before my accident, had a friend on the crew who invited me, and they

asked me to come back the next season. But of course there was no way I

could do that when I could barely walk and had limited use of one arm . . .

Like you said, everyone has to have a hobby. I was starting to get back

into photography, after a lapse while my kids were growing up, I loved

taking pictures of cars. Now I pretty much concentrate on that, although my

favorite subjects are travel photos, and of course, grandchildren. Not

worth it to spend time worrying about what you can't do, better to find

something else you enjoy that you can do!

I hope you are able to get back to the track someday, it's definitely an

adrenalin rush!

Wow, , I wish I had some of those opportunities. I would certainly

enjoy a stint on a Top Fuel team. When I was a kid, a man offered me a

complete Quarteer Midget package. Extra engines, tires, frames, etc, for

$300. It might have been $300 Million as far as I was concerned. I had to

build my own everything since it took money to buy things and I never even

got an allowance. When I did work and get a few dollars, it was taken from

me to pay for 'living expenses'. But it has been fun and frustrating. I

wouldn't trade it for anything, I don't think. If your Boxter needs some

TLC, I'd be glad to help you out. ;)
