Guest guest
Hi Guys: When I awoke this morning, my right leg from hip down was in so much pain that I have borrowed my daughter's crutch to be able to walk. I think it is time for cane shopping, as the crutch is causing more stress on my shoulder, elbow and wrist, and I certainly do not need any more pain at this time lol. So, I wanted to ask those of you who have canes, where did you get them, and what is the average price? My 22 year old son saw me walking around the house with the crutch and he said it looked scary to him that I needed something like that to walk. He is going to be giving me a ride to a few places today, I really have been not trusting myself on driving lately, so I have my kids drive me where I need to go. I have not given up entirely, but when my Fibro fog is on high alert, I really do appreciate not having to concentrate on going anywhere in the car, especially somewhere I have not been before. Gosh, I feel like a 90 year old today........... Kathe in CA Kathe in CA __________________________________________ DSL – Something to write home about. Just $16.99/mo. or less. dsl. Guest guest
Kathie You can just about spend what you want on a cane. I have one from Walgreen's that cost about 25 dollars, and one from a medical supply place that cost 50 dollars. I have seen them at Osco drug for around 35 dollars, and QVC has some designer one that cost big bucks, So basically any decent big name drug store probable will carry them. Also I have seen used ones at goodwill, in WI Kathe Sabetzadeh <lv2ryd@...> wrote: Hi Guys: When I awoke this morning, my right leg from hip down was in so much pain that I have borrowed my daughter's crutch to be able to walk. Guest guest
Hi, I'd like to make a suggestion. I have never been able to use a cane comfortably. Fortunately, my doctor was aware of a crutch that he called Canadian. I have since found out it is also called a platform crash. It's really rather simple to use. Picture a high diving board with the stairs being the " cane " part and the board being the platform on which you place your forearm. Tha platform is then Velcroed to your arm between the elbow and hand. At the front of the platform is a portion that you hold on to that sits in a vertical position. The idea is, as you walk, you are putting the weight on your forearm instead of your shouler or hands. You can generally find them at any store that sells medical supplies. Sometimes they need to order them. Just make sure the one you get has good padding on the platform. This type of crutch does look a little weird, but I was past being concerned about how I looked by the time I needed to use it. It certainly enabled me to get around a without too much difficulty. I remember using it through multiple foot surgeries, I used it for a while with both knee surgery replacement surgeries and when I had both of my hips replaced. So I just keep it around for any time that I feel the need for it. So Kathe, you may want to give one of these a try. They are a bit expensive but insurance will often pay if you have a doc's Rx. They're certainly worth the money because they are relatively pain free to use! You can do an image search on google to see a platform crutch. Guest guest
My wife has an aluminum cane with adjustment holes and a spring loaded pin. As I see it, multi adjustment is not necessarily a plus. You will always be the same tall, so 'set it and forget it'. Hers also has a rounded head on it. I haven't seen a hand that's made to fit a rounded head. Mine is aluminum with a " T " shaped wood head and is collapsible. It's much more comfortable than the wife's is. It folds into 4 sections to fit into a pocket or purse. It's held together with a bungee cord so when you take it out, it opens and locks in place in one motion. I took the tip off and cut the length with a hacksaw to suit me. I've been told that you stand straight with your arm hanging normally and the handle should be just at or above the wrist. That gives enough distance to comfortably put pressure on the arm without discomfort. The arm should be bent a small amount. Be careful about cutting, it can't be easily put back! As for finding a cane, even WalMart has them, as do many pharmacies, and the prices vary greatly, so shop around. Dennis Re: [ ] Canes ..............
