Guest guest
Hi to all, my name is Peggy and I am 46 years old. I was diagnosed with RA in 1996, but until recently felt pretty good. I have been on methotrexate since Oct. 2005 and am not sure if I feel any better. Is anyone else taking this and if so how are you feeling? I feel all alone with this and am looking for someone to talk to about it. My husband and children are very supportive, but I don't think they truly understand the daily pain. If you can help, I would love to hear from you.
Guest guest
Welcome Peggy. MTX can take several months to start working. What dose are you on? Often it is prescribed with a lower starting dose and then increased if your lab work is normal. Your doctor may increase your dose and if so, hopefully it will help. I started mtx several months ago and so far it isn't helping but I'm on a low dose. I also take Enbrel which has helped me more than any drug I've ever taken. I've had RA for 30 years. I'm 51 and also have a very supportive husband. This group has a lot of wonderful people who understand what you are going through. a On Jan 3, 2006, at 1:07 PM, peggylm20 wrote: > Hi to all, my name is Peggy and I am 46 years old. Guest guest
a, Do you know how low a dose you can take that is effective? I am getting desperate to get past this flare....I am wondering if I try 2- 4 of MTX maybe that might work with no side effects... Toni > > > Hi to all, my name is Peggy and I am 46 years old. Guest guest
Welcome Peggy, Sometimes, you might need to take something else along with mtx. I always think the same way, is it really helping, and then when I go off it, boy do I see how it's working. I am taking Plaquenil right now, I had to go off the mtx, because of the liver enzymes. My rheumy doesn't really want to put me back on it. So, I'm taking Prednisone 10mg daily right now. I am having horrible side effects from it, but I don't have much choice right now. I'm barely getting around. You might talk to the doctor about trying something else. I am always here if you need to chat, just email me anytime. A big welcome hug, Tawny > > Hi to all, my name is Peggy and I am 46 years old. Guest guest
Toni, I would think it depends on the person. posted an article about a month ago that I'll try to find. It was a study that was done using the combination of Enbrel and low dose mtx. I THINK the study was with 7.5 or 10mg's of mtx, but I'm not sure. The study results show that low dose of mtx was effective when used in combination with Enbrel. It may be worth a try to take a lower dose. I hope if you take the Humira, it is effective. Even if the shot is painful, it's only taken one every 2 weeks and hopefully the relief you will get will make it worth the pain of the shot. As far as the mailing, I've had my Enbrel mailed for years with no problems. They pack it very well in a cooler with lots of ice packs. Mine has sat in the Florida sun for a few hours and the ice packs were still solid. They don't want to have to replace it, so they pack it well. I hope you feel better soon. a On Jan 3, 2006, at 10:10 PM, Ms radar wrote: > a, > Do you know how low a dose you can take that is effective? Guest guest
I am wondering if it would help..then again with the MTX you need so much constant bloodwork. With my new insurance labwork and xrays are not covered until after I meed deductible....then they only pay 80%. I just don't have the deductible or the 20%....so they only way I can get lab or xray is at the same time that I am at the doctor...its very hard to find a doc with lab and xray inhouse...especially one that does the labs my rheummy orders. I only have one rheummy in my area and he does not draw any blood or do any xrays....so I have to see my PCP and then take the info to the rheummy...that is two copays...my co-pays are pretty high. So I am wondering if they can find something that will help, not require a lot of labwork and hopefully will not have side effects that I can't handle or are bad for me. I know I am asking for the world!! LOL So far plaquinil 400mbg is going ok I guess...I am so bad about remembering to take it. I am trying to do better. So that is my next problem is remembering to take the humira every two weeks. I just know I will remember once a month if I am lucky!
