Guest guest
My husband has gotten soc sec dis since 1990. Our 3 kids also get a dependants check, which we have always deposited into our checking account becuz we use it for their needs thru the month. Yearly we do get a form to fill out to account for our spending of that money that gets sent in their name for their care. Today my husband tried to deposit the checks into our checking account as we have been doing all these years and our bank said he could not do so, anymore. They said now any check with a minors name on it at all anywhere must be deposited into a savings account for that child. I have not heard of any such new law going into effect today. My husband is now at the social security office trying to find out details.but it sure seems weird to me. Guest guest
hmmm. from Jan 1990 until just last week we always got the kids checks in the mail and deposited them into OUR checking.we do not do direct deposit anymore becuz one time our bank misplaced a decimal (NOT in our favor) and then took almost a year to fix it and while " fixing " it there were a great number of problems over it and it wound up costing us an enormous amount of money to correct the error. Makes no sense to me since we use the checks for the kids care and the kids do not pay their own living expenses----and we pay their stuff from the checking account (rent, dr bills, groceries) we get a yearly form to fill out to account for what was spent on the kids behalf.... The checks are written to my husband in my husbands name- and say the kids name on them as being for that child. My oldest child was with hubby when he tried to deposit the checks, she said hey I do not want to put this check in a savings account in my name, I want it put in this checking account --but the bank still would not do it. we are also in IL and never in all the 16 years has there ever been a problem before. Thats whats most weird. Seems to me my husband shuld be able to deposit a check made out to him in whatever account he wants to deposit it into? ANd usually social security writes and sends a letter telling us if things get changed. we never got any letter. - In , kringlemom@a... wrote: > > i think that is how it was with my son and i was the acct executor.it always > had to be direct deposit into a savings acct. i pulled the $ out of the > savings and put it in my checking. my husband died 1/7/93. so i am surprised you > got checks any other way > > kathy in il > > > >

Guest guest
Dreamer, That is correct and evidently your bank just caught it. My daughter was on SSI for her sickle cell anemia for the past 18 yrs and I had to have a saving account for her. I would suggestion getting a savings account..use online banking and have them tied to your checking account so you can transfer funds between the accounts online. When my dauughter got SSI she was always on direct deposit. Good luck Toni --- In , " dreamer_plus " <dreamer_plus@w...> wrote: > > My husband has gotten soc sec dis since 1990. Guest guest
Dreamer, I am even surprised they allowed you to receive a paper check...I was REQUIRED to have direct deposit into a custodial savings account...I was required to do that since 1987! You must have gotten lucky and slipped through somehow. You know how slow social security is...I have had them take as long as three years to catch an error on there part...and them blame me for the over payment. Well they got away with that once...but the next few times...I always sent them certifed letters so I had a reciept for the notice of change...then when they wanted to take money back...I had proof...not my fault you system is screwed up. I won every time after that...then they started getting better at making changes in a timely fashion. I was thinking they made me do it cause when I did the application the already knew I had checking and savings accounts..plus my hubby was in the Army and was required to have direct deposit. Maybe when you initially applied you guys did not have an account in a bank..so that is why they did not require it at first. Guest guest
My kids have saving accounts..but why am I gonna go one day and deposit their checks into their savings accounts, wait the mandatory 3 days for them to make the funds available and then go back to the bank withdraw from the kids accounts and redepoit into my checking? Our bank charges per each transaction, whether it is in person in the bank lobby, drive thru or atm. why am I gonna horse around with their 3 savings accounts and my checking account all the time, that is just dumb. The checks are dependants coverage from mine and my hussbands soc sec disability, not SSI, not the kids disabilities---and is to be used for their needs, care, day to day living. The kids do not endorse the checks, the checks are not written to the kids....the checks are written to my husband, in his name. Seems to me my husband should be able to cash or deposit checks made out to HIM where ever he wants to. and for 16 years he has. This will now mean he has to deposit one check into our account, get his signature on the kids checks, then my signature, cuz it is my name on the accounts for the kids, then fill out 3 deposit slips for the kids, wait 3 days, go back and have 3 withdrawl slips for the kids checks...to move the money to our checking. and pay the resulting transaction service charges for all those stupid transactions. nd gathering the 3 kids signatures for the withdrawls. Nope, no online banking, I do not have an in home computer. Nope, no direct deposit, the bank did a very very very costly error before on us, and we refuse to do direct deposit anymore. We have been getting the checks since 1990 and have been banking here sine 1980. It's weird. - In , " Ms radar " <aclavern33@a...> wrote: > > Dreamer, > That is correct and evidently your bank just caught it. Guest guest
no, we have been at the same bank with checking and savings and savings for the kids since the kids were born (1988, 1990, and 1995) and our accounts have been there since 1980. social security never even asked if we had bank accounts at all.they just began sending us paper checks back then and when they added me on in 2001 they offered us direct deposit but did not require it. SO, my husband, our 3 kids and me all get paper checks. Our bank has been offering direct deposit since 1980. social security never required us to use it. and social security did not tell us we had to this time, our bank refused to accept the deposit when my husband went tomake the deposit. - In , " Ms radar " <aclavern33@a...> wrote: > > Dreamer, > I am even surprised they allowed you to receive a paper check...I was > REQUIRED to have direct deposit into a custodial savings account...I > was required to do that since 1987! > > You must have gotten lucky and slipped through somehow. Guest guest
I am sure our amounts are right, it matches what we were told we would get, what our annual statements said we would get and what we have been getting for 16 years now..... - In , kringlemom@a... wrote: > > > In a message dated 1/8/2006 7:33:17 P.M. Guest guest
Can you change to a more user friendly bank. I do not know why...but I can guess that so many people abuse the money they get for there kids that SSA is trying to make sure they can track the use of that money. Stupid I know... My daughters check came in my name..no need for a signature from my daughter. Wow they make you wait 3 days before you an access you money..that sucks right there.....they only do that here if its a personal check or you deposit after 1pm then you will see it the next day. I would change banks...there must be a more user friendly bank...shop around...some banks offer special accounts that are free. I have free checking...free ATM(as long as I use my banks..which there are on every corner it seems), free money orders, free online banking and free Mastercard check card...I only write one check a month...everything else I pay either online or on the phone with my check card. I would suggest everyone shop around when it comes to banks...cause some bank fees are totally out of hand. Also credit unions tend to offer lower fees and are more flexible when it comes to the rules about certain things. Toni > > > > > > My husband has gotten soc sec dis since 1990. Guest guest
Again, sounds like its tiime to shop for a new bank!! I would also spread the word to others how you have been treated by your old bank. they won't like the bad things you have to say. Toni > > > > > > > > i think that is how it was with my son and i was the acct > > executor.it always > > > > had to be direct deposit into a savings acct. i pulled the $ out > > of the > > > > savings and put it in my checking. my husband died 1/7/93. so i > > am surprised you > > > > got checks any other way > > > > > > > > kathy in il > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
before I shop for a new bank, I wanted to find out if what the bank said was true. the bank said it was a new federal law..... Guess I am going to the social security office this week. If it is true it is a new federal law, then it is not exactly my bank that is the problem. So back to my original question, did a new law go into effect on Jan 1 regarding the dependants childrens checks and how they are deposited or cashed? Seems to me they already do try to make people accountable by getting a statement annualy about what is done with the money. I am not sure that all the extra transactions required would really make it easier to track how the dependants money is used. - In , " Ms radar " <aclavern33@a...> wrote: > > Again, sounds like its tiime to shop for a new bank!!
