Mac,

The paraffin baths are available at health supply stores, the Pennys

catalog and many general dept. stores. They are wonderful - not only for RA

but also for carpel tunnel wrist pain.

Mac,

I received a paraffin bath for Christmas from the kids! I haven't had time

to try it yet, but I've seen them all over the place here (near Chicago) -

Service Merchandise, Wal-Mart, Meijer, Linens 'N Things. The one I have is

made by HoMedics, Inc. Here is their web site:

http://www.homedics.com

There they list all of their products and the stores that carry them. I also

got the foot bath. I'm not sure I'll be online very much if these products

work as well as everyone says they do.

Hope your hands are feeling good today.

Good point, Kathy. As long as you are careful not to heat the wax too

much, you should be able to get the same results more economically by

using your own pot.

Hi,

I feel so cheated when so many of you sing the praises of hot wax. When I

was doing physical therapy, one day they did a hot-wax treatment on my

hands. My hands get hot anyway, and after that they had a fever for two

days! In hindsight, now that I am not so new to RA, I was probably in a

flare at the time. Even so, I am afraid to try it again. I sure would love

to stick my feet in that pot of wax though! My daughter had her feet " done "

at a spa and loved it!

glad it helps the rest of you though!

Hello Again!

I keep seeing Illinois -- especially Chicago -- pop up in these posts. It

brings to mind that after my divorce, I eventually dated someone for a long

time and one day found out my former husband and my friend were born in the

same hospital in -- you guessed it -- Chicago!

You seem so normal considering all you are going through. The most amicable

divorce is still hard, especially when children are involved. I wish you

lots of luck. I have never regretted walking out of my marriage into

poverty, although I should have been a little smarter -- I did not even get

an attorney! Take better care of yourself financially than I did. I just

wanted out at the time, even though my friends warned me that one day I

would regret not asking for part of my husband's retirement for the years I

put into the relationship. Too late for me, but not for you!

Hope all is well.

Patsy

I could sure use that on my hands right about now. Ouchies! They hurt and

don't normally. I think it is bcs I have been off the computer for 2 weeks

and my hands are rebelling. This is why I recommend typing daily for everyone

I know that has arthritis and hand probs. It truly does keep your fingers

limber and mobile and the pain down. And, it has really slowed my finger

damage. But hey, when you get sick you get sick. So my fingers are back to

the keys. Today they are on the email tread. hehe.. OK, I am getting tired

now.

,

I can perhaps provide you with some information about PET scans. PET scans

are a relatively new technology and are used to " pick up " things that an MRI

may not. It uses heat to do this. On a PET scan, the area that is being

scanned will have different colors, namely red, blue, green, and sometimes

yellow. Depending on what they are testing for, the different colors can

represent different things. For instance, when scanning someones brain for

how they respond to illicit drugs, red may be the predominant color if they

are a current or ex addict. The investigator may flood the patient with

images of heroin, cocaine, whatever that persons current or past addiction

may be. Then after the brain has been flooded with these images, the PET

scan is done and the more red color, the more that person is craving drugs.

The more blue that shows up, the less likely that person is craving drugs,

or that the images the brain was flooded with are affecting him/her.

Likewise, I have seen PET scans used to detect tumors using the heat that

the particular part of the body gives off. However, because PET scans are

relatively new, there are few places that have them and even fewer personnel

skilled and knowledgeable in their use as well as being able to interpret

the results. Most major university medical centers have a PET scanner with

qualified staff. But I know here in Denver, out of a possible 16 hospitals

in the Denver metro area, only 1 hospital has the PET scanner, and it's not

used all that much. The reason is because insurance is yet up to par on the

multiple benefits of a PET scan. Most insurance companies will not pay for

the cost of having a PET scan done unless you can prove without doubt that

it is medically necessary and no other test (such as an MRI) will detect

what you are looking for. But then again, there are always the few

insurance companies who will pay for just about everything if a MD says it's

necessary.

Have you had an MRI done yet to detect these areas where wax has migrated?

If so, did it show anything? My best educated guess is that yes, a PET scan

would be able to pick up these areas, as they are sure to be areas that are

generating more heat. You would have to have the areas you think or know

the wax has deposited scanned, or else have a whole body scan.

Unfortunately, this scan, no matter how you go about it, will cost several

thousand dollars--in the neighborhood of $3000, and that will not include

the interpretation fees, which will be about another $200-300, if not more.

As for your questions about removing these " deposits " it is totally

possible. How it is done, I'm not sure, although it would have to be done

surgically and very meticulously. It would be similar to the way implants

need to be removed---all as one unit so that nothing breaks and spills.

Having wax deposited in various areas in your body is extremely dangerous,

as like Lany said, it can migrate and cause strokes and block arteries and

veins. So, it is imperative to address this issue, as you already have, and

find a reputable doctor who can perform the surgery.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask me. My

email is e_Rene@....

Sincerely,

e, RN, BSN

much! I'll check online to see if I can find a better

price than the beauty supply store.

Thanks!
