Guest guest
If your Mom is willing, a way to get a fearful dog to like strangers better is: Have a stranger sitting down (less intimidating) Have the stranger totally ignore (or appear to) the dog. NEVER make eye contact and casually toss treats in the direction of the dog. Towering over the dog and eye contact are " scary " things. Turning your head away is a " calming " technique. The treats are make the dog re-think the situation -- " Hmm.. strangers aren't so scary as I thought and they bring good things...maybe I should welcome them! " Any other " strangers " willing to work with you would be good, too! You can train it out -- but it take a lot of effort! Indyrose, who has played the stranger many times! > > Hi - > > Don't mean to bother you with this - but a ray of hope! Today my mom came over and other than a little bit of barking/'growling all was well. What I did this time was, I had Luna in her crate when my mom arrived - then, once she was settled in, I released Luna from her crate - she did bark and growl and run away, but eventually settled down and allowed my mom to pet her. Then, me, my mom and DD left to go to the movies (Brave) and when we got back there were no issues at all. So, maybe she remembers my mom and is comfortable with her. I also think the crate approach worked well. My trick now is to learn how to manage other guests and drop in guests. My father is visiting this weekend, so we shall see how that pans out. I hope well. Fingers crossed. > > Donna >

I really do think that little by little she will get more and more comfortable and learn what you want her to do. Its really hard to say what kind of life she had before coming to your house. I hope it goes well when your father comes to visit. Crossing fingers for you too. `* ¸*´¸.•´ ¸.•*¨)¸.•*¨)(¸.•´(¸.• (¸.•´¸¸.•¨¯`•.¸¸

Guest guest
Thanks, it is tough. is ok with it - she became a bit frightened of the dog after her accident anyway, so that was just adding fuel to the fire in our house. I just hope we can return her quickly to minimize the trauma. Donna Hi Everyone, Well, we finally reached the conclusion to return the dog to the rescue. Long story short, I don't think I could ever get to the point where I could feel comfortable with the dog around other people and especially kids. I'm sad, but I think this was the right decision for our family. I hope to get back to working out soon. Donna
Guest guest
thanks, . It was a really hard decision. I hope she finds the right home, too. I will eventually look again, but not for a few months. Our family needs to heal and recover. Guest guest
Hi - My DH doesn't really like cats,so I don't think that will work. I will try another dog at some point, but I'm going to be more careful about screening the dog before adopting. Guest guest
Sometimes the right decision hurts, even when it's right. We just put our 12-year old Golden down today, after a long health battle. Even though we knew it was right, and he had a long good life, it still hurts a lot. Indyrose > > Hi Everyone, > > Well, we finally reached the conclusion to return the dog to the rescue. Guest guest
Thanks. Yes, he was exactly a classical Golden who loved everyone. My son took him to nursing homes and such as a therapy dog, and even worked wonderfully for my mother. He will be sorely missed! Guest guest
That's sad! It's A LOT of working raising/training a dog and I would think almost impossible if you don't have the free time to do it. I prefer cats, that's why I have two Siamese kittens. Cats are a lot less work and tend to be less destructive although my 4 month old kitten Max has been driving us crazy because he just won't mind. I would NEVER give him away though because I love him and I think when he gets older he will FINALLY learn to mind better. When these two kittens calm down I play to look for and adopt a Lynx point Siamese. I'm going to try to find a kitten but I would consider getting one that was a year or two old. I would feel like I was giving the cat a death sentence if I had to return it so I hope I pick the right one! Guest guest
Jen I have to say, my sister is a total DOG person, she does mastiff rescue - but had to get a cat because of the destruction mice were doing to her home in the country. She got a " barn cat " and never planned to love her.... but now she loves her she's an awesome mouser and super sweet, and though my sister is still totally a dog person, she does love Rango, her orange tabby girl huntress kitty I know this is off topic, but I will add - I grew up with a dog, a " cockapoo " mutt, and having to put her to sleep is still the #1 worst day of my life. when I was born, Candy was 2, so when I was 13 she was 15 and had health issues that necessitated putting her to sleep. Even though I loved her and still miss her soooo much - even as a child I was deep down a cat person. I always wanted a cat and admired how sexy and mysterious they were. They continue to enchant me every day. I love them and am spellbound. I do love dogs as I love all critters, but - to me they are dirty, hump legs, and are subservient. I tend to prefer the little dog buddies over the big ones - the " yippers " papillons, shitzus, llaso apsos, pomeranians, pugs - those are Lou dogs okay, done rambling! Most people don't like cats because they've never had one! Guest guest
It is very sad, deep in her heart she isn't a bad dog, she was just very under-socialized as a puppy and now she is afraid of everything. If it were just DH & I, I think the decision would have been different, we would have had more time and patience to work with her and our "guests" would be adults and it is a lot easier to give adults directions on how to behave w/ a fearful dog. But w/ DD in the picture and her friends coming over, I'm really scared that there would be a fear biting incident - kids are a lot harder to "train" to behave around a dog and haivng one that is fearful is just an accident waiting to happen. I would probably end up having to crate the dog every time a friend came over and I wouldn't feel right about that either. I also would be very leary to take the dog out on a walk in the neighborhood b/c of fear issues w/ other people and dogs. I do think it is something that can be trained out - but I don't think we're the family to do it. My DD is also now afraid of the dog following the broken collarbone incident. Guest guest
Donna Nd Indy, I'm very sorry to hear about losing your dogs. Both ways of losing them are very difficult, and I hope you both have peace about your decisions, which were for the best.
