Well really I'm not crazy, I know that if I don't sign up for them I will never make it to open swim. I really enjoy the swimming drills that we do, it keeps swimming from getting too boring. Every week we work on a new stroke and I love that too. Anyway I signed up for two intermediate classes (Wednesday and Saturday) and an advanced class on Friday (the instructor gave me permission since I have the technique down but need to build endurance.) Unfortunately I will miss the first Friday and Saturday class because I'm attending an American Sign Language interpreter workshop that weekend. That should be the only classes I miss though. Guest guest
I'm not , but my advice is to take a deep breath before you start the turn and blow out gently through your nose as you're turning. By blowing out, you're less likely to suck in. Flip turns are hard! Guest guest
That's definitely a problem, running out of air. It takes a LOT of practice to really get good at flip turns. They make it look so easy on the Olympics but it just isn't. You have to learn how to pace your blowing so that you don't run out of air (or you come up sputtering mid-turn, did that plenty of times) while still exerting yourself to push hard off the wall and timing the flip itself just right so you get enough of your feet on the wall to push evenly. If you never get comfortable with them, it is absolutely nothing to feel bad about. Trying is great though. Like and I said, we generally avoid them now! Guest guest
The intermediate swim class is suppose to teach people how to do flip turns. We're also suppose to be able to do the following by the end of class: tread water for 2 minutes; do a standing dive off the diving board, retrieve an object in 9 to 12 feet of water, with feet first or pike surface dive; one lap (50 yards) freestyle and backstroke with proper body position, body rotation, correct kick and arm rotation; one lap of breaststroke; 1/2 lap of butterfly; and perform proper starts and flip turns. But since I've taken intermediate and advanced classes before and because I know the advanced swim instructor she is letting me in her advanced class too YIPPEE! I prefer her teaching methods to the intermediate teacher on Wednesdays. Guest guest
Sounds like a fantastic class, Jen!! Enjoy both that and the advanced class! You'll get those darn flip turns down! Being able to do a pike surface dive and then retrieve an object at the bottom of the pool takes some similar skills as flip turns too so they'll both play off each other. You're making me want to get back in the pool (no convenient hours for the high school pools near me though)! To: exercisevideos Sent: Tue, July 31, 2012 10:50:10 PMSubject: Re: Exercise classes I'm taking this Fall The intermediate swim class is suppose to teach people how to do flip turns. Guest guest
No rec centers here. Just the local schools. (It is still fairly rural here.) There is a gym down the street from me that has a nice pool but for right now we're not joining. That's about all there is.If you can do 9 you'll be able to do 12 pretyy soon.P.S. I saw your other note but am off to bed, I'll try to respond tomorrow. To: exercisevideos Sent: Tue, July 31, 2012 11:00:26 PMSubject: Re: Exercise classes I'm taking this Fall Do you have any rec center pools you can use?I love how relaxed I feel in the water.I think I can do a surface dive now but I'm not sure about doing to 12 feet but I for sure and do 9 feet because it's the same as my pool. Guest guest
I can't do flip turns. I need to learn. I mastered bilateral breathing a few years ago after literally about 20-25 years of trying (on and off)...but my neck was hurting and I decided I was just gonna do it. Now it's second nature and I found out last year I have bone spurs in my neck...hence the pain...so I'm glad I had the bilateral already mastered! To: exercisevideos Sent: Tue, July 31, 2012 10:12:44 PMSubject: Re: Exercise classes I'm taking this Fall Thanks , I will try that! I think when I tried it before I may have blew too hard and so didn't have enough air to go all the way around. Guest guest
Okay I sent a blank reply, sorry about that!! anyway no I don't think you are crazy. Actually there are days when breathing every 3rd or 4th stroke to the same side is faster for me as opposed to the bilateral...other days bilateral seems faster. go figure. When you are learning flip turns, please share! I'm interested. Thanks for not thinking I'm crazy Barb! I will be learning the flip turn in the Fall...I should with three swimming class right...?
