Guest guest
, here goes ... Whether a person develops rheumatoid arthritis is thought to be dependent on several factors and not necessarily the same reasons for all people. It is believed that there is a genetic susceptibility and also environmental factors. We don't know all of the genes involved. We don't know with great certainly about the environmental variables either. In this study, they looked at 515 people who had could be classified as having RA (according the ACR criteria for classification of RA) and 769 people without RA (the control subjects). They wanted to see if there was a difference between the anti-CCP-positive and anti-CCP-negative patients in terms of environmental exposure. Smoking was associated with anti-CCP-positive RA. Drinking was inversely associated with anti-CCP-positive RA (people with RA were less likely to be anti-CCP-positive if they drank). Drinking coffee, ever having used oral contraceptives, and having a first-degree relative with schizophrenia were also risk factors for having anti-CCP-positive RA. Obesity was associated with anti-CCP-negative RA. For women who first menstruated at age 15 or greater, the risk of having either anti-CCP-negative or positive RA was about twice that of individuals who reached menarche at age 12 or earlier.
