I love my job but am ENVIOUS you work with active people and get all these GREAT fitness perks, !

Hi all, First of all, here's a video of some of my crazier coworkers, including the owner of the company. She's the really super thin blonde woman with the greenish yellow top. This is the park across the street from our building. I wasn't there that day, but I probably would have just cheered them on. These women are beasts! Most of those women play or played rugby or soccer. One of those gals even has MS, but she took the dive. Some are in their 50's with bad knees and bad shoulders, and they still fling themselves across a field:

http://youtu.be/M32tkCmpQN8As for me, I've been insanely busy. Sorry I keep falling off the list. We just hired a new crew and I'm in the process of getting them trained and up to speed. My work schedule has been varying, but I have been doing Firm workouts, bike commutes and walk commutes. My feet are still dodgy, but not too bad. I'm doing OK, just sometimes don't have a chance to sit and type.

I also started doing some workouts with the above women. They hired a trainer from a gym called Ice Chamber.  She's amazing. Super tough lady. The company pays for it. All we do is show up on our own time. http://www.icechamber.com/

These are incredibly tough workouts. They're very much like Crossfit. We do part of the workout in that same park that you just saw, and then we go back into the company gym for the indoor torture part of the workout. I really like these workouts. The think I like best is that I can do my own subs when I need to. The trainer is really tough, but if she sees that you're pushing through with a substitution, she'll cheer you on.

I am so grateful. Scoring that job has got to be one of the very best things that has ever happened to me. I really love these people, they inspire me. Lucky, lucky me. Being around them encourages me leave my comfort zone. I currently have the urge to be too cautious. It's because of last year's injuries. While I'm not ready to fling myself like they do, watching them reminds me to take a risk from time to time. I wouldn't have even considered one of those Ice Chamber workouts otherwise. They look scary-hard. (They really are, too!),

Well and rolling over stability balls isn't really a workout, so yeah, given past injuries I'd avoid that one too!  LOL

Agreed! That one is way too dangerous! In the more aerobic, yet less dangerous category, I did join the hippity hop race last Wednesday. (That's not us in the video.) I also participated in the swiss ball soccer event at the park the week before. There were NINE swiss balls in play at once, and it was more like anarchy than soccer. People were getting knocked down right and left, myself included. The grass was soft and muddy, so I was OK.:) Ridiculous fun. Those are just work breaks and pre-meeting ice-breakers. The real workouts with the personal trainer are serious business. More like boot camp.

Wow, that was really cool! It's like having " recess " , lol. I am impressed with

them for doing something so active and fun on their lunch hour. They all look to

be in incredible shape. I wish my coworkers were into fitness like that!

Ditto from me! We can take free cooking classes with our CEO's personal chef, but usually we have to drive quite a distance (from where I am anyway) to get to them. Even still, it is a nice perk if you're motivated to take advantage of it. I might be more motivated to go there for cool workouts. If you work in the corporate headquarters there is a gym you can use, but I never work there, just visit for meetings. I haven't watched the video you link to yet, will later. From:

Hi A! I would so do that ball jump! Looks like fun to me. Has your company ever tried renting one of those human foosball courts, I think they would have a BLAST playing that. Those Ice Chamber workouts do look hard....I'm NOT in shape for that. I've been busy too, just post when you can, someone will be here, JenSubject: workouts and coworker stuntsTo:

Hi Jen, they probably would!. They used to take the office chairs out to the park for office chair foosball. Super silly. They replaced the crappy chairs we used to have, so I doubt we'll be taking our nice, new chairs outside now. :)Thank you so much Jen. :) I hope your mom gets some good news soon.

I have MANY nurses in my WW classes and have had a few docs too. In fact, I do two WW At Work classes at a local hospital. The nurses (and docs) know what they should do but their work life is so hectic that they often find it difficult to take care of themselves while they're taking care of others and that spills over to home too. Not that that is an excuse for them but it does make it more challenging to have healthy habits. Seems like quite the contradiction though, I know it!To: exercisevideos Sent: Tue, July 24, 2012 9:54:29 AMSubject: Re: workouts and coworker stunts

I'm sure you're right. Stress has a lot to do with it, and I think that health professionals often have to deal with very sad and difficult situations. No matter how professional someone is, they can't avoid feeling emotional connections sometimes. Add to this the possibility of developing a fatalistic view to life when they work with the dying, as in a hospice. That's all they see It must be very challenging for the people who do the actual hands-on care. All kinds of people end up in hospice, even health conscious people. So, if that's all the nurse sees, she or he might wonder what difference it makes. It makes sense to me now, but at the time, I found those eating habits very surprising. From my perspective, I just find my days more enjoyable when I've been eating well and exercising. The final outcome is unavoidable, but I want to feel good before all that happens.

I was the same way, really surprised to see so many healthcare professsionals coming to WW until they explained to me what it was like. The stress of caring for very sick people is so hard too. One of the biggest issues for many of them is that they cannot have food with them when they're with patients (so no cheese stick in the pocket even to munch on the way from one room to another) and they are often moving so fast from patient to patient all day long that being able to get time to eat can be extremely difficult. Then they get too hungry and overeat. Some of the strategies we've come up with are making sure they get really good breakfasts (lots of fiber and protein for hunger satisfaction), bringing smoothies already mixed up so they can at least get sips of that, making sure there are super fast things

to eat like grapes and cheese sticks so if it is one of those days and they can get near the kitchen they can at least grab a few of those and run and making sure they pack things to eat in the car on the way home so they're not super starving when they get home. Many of them are very successful but it is really tough too. They have to be really determined to not let the obstacles stand in their way.To: "exercisevideos " <exercisevideos >Sent: Wed, July 25, 2012 11:26:03 AMSubject: Re: workouts and coworker stunts

On Jul 24, 2012, at

Hi Ronda,I worked for a hospice a couple of years ago. Despite the fact that my coworkers were health professionals, they had the most unhealthy diets and habits that I've ever seen. They thought I was a freak. Well, maybe I am. ;)There are just 6 of you there?

Wow, that was really cool! It's like having "recess", lol. I am impressed with them for doing something so active and fun on their lunch hour. They all look to be in incredible shape. I wish my coworkers were into fitness like that! (Besides me doing my videos, just one other girl walks regularly, out of 6 of us.)

Hi ,

Yes, I work at an orthodontist's office, so there are 4 assistants in the

back (which I am one of) and 2 front-desk girls. They kind of think I am a

freak, too, lol (because I eat vegan)! I can see why they think that, since it's

tricky eating out and I avoid almost all the extra goodies that come in to the

office, but at least I feel good.:)

It does strike me as very odd when health care workers eat very unhealthy

diets (or smoke)! But I know how hard addictions are to break, especially under

stressful situations.

I just spent the last two days at the hospital, with my 18-year old son.

He had two seizures yesterday morning, for the first time ever in his life. They

did all kinds of tests, and found nothing (no epilepsy, tumors, or drugs.) They

are guessing it is just a weird combination of the hot weather we've been having

and the lack of enough food and drink, maybe exhaustion. It was scary, but he is

doing fine now.

But the food at that particular hospital was terrible! I can't believe they

didn't have any fruit as an option in the cafeteria for breakfast. Even at

lunch, there were no salads. It's strange...I would think a hospital of all

places should at least have fruits and fresh veggies! Another hospital in our

area has a great selection of healthy things in their cafeteria, so it is

possible lol.

Hi Ronda,How scary about your son! I'm so glad he's okay though! Between me & my DH we've both been inpatients at large hospitals out by us and both have had primarily horrible choices available in the cafeteria. The stuff they give the patients isn't much better nutritionally either. I've always found that bizarre. To: exercisevideos Sent: Wed, July 25, 2012 7:14:06 PMSubject: Re: workouts and coworker stunts

Thank you, .

And yes, most of what they feed patients is pretty horrible, too. Hopefully the

medical establishment will figure that out someday.

Hi Ronda,I am so, so glad that your son is doing better. That sounds so, so scary! You sure don't ever want to see your kid going through that.I'm so happy there's another vegan here. You remind me of the time a good friend of mine suffered his first major heart attack. Do you know what they brought him after his bypass surgery? Steak with mashed potatoes and gravy. I don't know if this was some sort of magical, statin-infused medicinal steak, but that did not make any sense to me at all. I guess it was a blessing that I was too nauseated to eat each time I was in the hospital last year. All I could hold down was the ice chips, but who knows what they would have served me otherwise. I probably would have relied on family to bring me some soup or something. The vegan thing works great for the office situation, especially the hospice. It made it super easy to turn down the junk that people brought in.

Thank you, . It was scary. I definitely have a new sympathy for people

who deal with that on a regular basis. You just feel so helpless.

And it's nice to know another vegan!:) I know some other vegetarians, but no

vegans.

I agree, I would definitely have to have my husband or someone else smuggle food

in for me if I was ever hospitalized.

That's unbelievable that they served a heart attack patient a plate of saturated

fat (steak and mashed potatoes) for their first meal at a hospital...wow! Very

scary.
