Guest guest
Hello Can anybody please tell me why I am suddenly experiencing the most terrible mood swings? It is crazy, I can't believe this is me. I used to be the most stable person, always able to control myself, very constant. But what is happening now is really scary!! Though I have Lupus and Sclerosis (2 years), my condition is more or less stable, I don't think that I am really suffering horribly. I think they are overlapping, so I have no really clear symptoms of either. I am on methotrexate, depomedrol and plaquenil. There is no really 'big' problem in my life, just the usual, so no reason from this direction. Is it the medication? Any experts out there? I really don't want to take any anit-depressants, any alternative? Thanks and have a nice day amira
Guest guest
One of the first things that comes to mind is " how old are you " ?... Anytime someone mentions severe, out of the blue mood swings, I think menopause. If you have lupus, even if your YOUNG, you could be going through " premature ovarian failure " . Lupus doesn't just eat your muscles, kidneys and other tender bits, auto immunity can cause thyroid failure, type 1 diabetes and early infertility. The second thing is have you had a CBC [ complete blood count] done recently? You might have one of the more virulent forms of anemia. Especially taking methotrexate. It can leave you with megoblastic anemia, and since the B-vitamins control nerve function..you won't just be tired. There is also " Depression of chronic illness " which is very common in auto immune disorders. Not all depressed people are " blue " or " down " , sometimes depression can manifest as agitation and anxiety. < sheepish grin> Hope this helps Ms. IVRDSG@... Guest guest
Amira, The Depo-Medrol is a strong suspect, since corticosteroids often cause mood swings. How long have you been on it? How long have you been on MTX and Plaquenil, and when did the mood swings start? Not an MD I'll tell you where to go! Guest guest
Hi Amira. I'm in no way an expert and still pretty new at dealing with this myself, but personally, my moods drop suddenly just from sheer frustration. Trying to get meds regulated, dealing with secondary infections, extreme fatigue, etc. Everyone here is so supportive, that's why I keep coming back. Even if I don't post alot, it's encouraging to know that there are others out there, and they are survivors! Blessings, > > Hello > > Can anybody please tell me why I am suddenly experiencing the most terrible mood swings? > It is crazy, I can't believe this is me. Guest guest
Has anyone got depression on the AP? I have and I know that's what it is because never had it in my 14 yrs w/ the RA. Yes, tha's right, I got down when I first got diagnosed, but not what I feel now, no specific reasons that would trigger anything. I am thinking about stopping the AP for awhile, so I can get myself back to normal. Thanks, eandsspivey <espivey@...> wrote: Hi Amira. Guest guest
Hi Amira, Have you had your thyroid tested lately? Hypothyroidism seems to go with RA and can cause mood swings. It can be easily regulate with a synthetic hormone, but if this is the case be sure to get the name brand synthroid and not a generic. This is one case where it does make a difference. Guest guest
Hey I have been on mtx for two years, never complained of depression. Then I was on depomedrol for 1 year, then did not need it for approx. one more year and had to start 3 months ago. During this first year no complaints of depression Plaquenil was started 3 months ago, depression 2 months ago. That's why I was suspecting the plaquenil. However, it might be s.th. else like some of the other members suggested. But when you have an autoimmune disease, where you have to take lots of meds., you always attribute any new symptom to either autoimmune or the meds, though it could be s.th. completely unrelated. Thank you all for your replies amira <Matsumura_Clan@...> wrote: Amira, The Depo-Medrol is a strong suspect, since corticosteroids often cause mood swings. How long have you been on it? Guest guest
Amira, It's possible that it's the Plaquenil. All three of your meds have the potential to affect your mood. If you have lupus, you could have central nervous system involvement which could be responsible for your mood changes. When you say you have " Sclerosis, " do you mean systemic sclerosis or multiple sclerosis? Not an MD I'll tell you where to go! Guest guest
Hey I have systemic lupus and systemic sclerosis (sine). At the ver start of my illnesss, I felt more like having sclerosis, because my skin was burning like hell and I always had the feeling that it is being torn apart, in addition to horrible fatigue and problems digesting food and low grade fever! Then I had a very calm time of remission, followed by probably lupus symtoms, joint pain, bone pain, muscle pain alternating, always feeling that I am coming down with a flu, But I also must admit that until now (2 years) I have not had really damaging symptomes. I read once that sometimes two auto-immune diseases could be hampering each other in that none of them is really able to show fully, or at least this is what I want to believe. Thanks for your concern and take care amira <Matsumura_Clan@...> wrote: Amira, It's possible that it's the Plaquenil. All three of your meds have the potential to affect your mood.
