Life Fitness Has Slight Increase in Second Quarter

The fitness segment of Brunswick Corp., Lake Forest, IL, which is comprised of Life Fitness and Hammer Strength equipment, had a slight increase in sales in the second quarter compared to the same period a year ago, according to financials the company released last week.

24 Hour Fitness Sees Membership Increase from Olympic Exposure

The exposure that the Olympics provide 24 Hour Fitness through its sponsorships provides a boost to the company, says President and CEO Carl Liebert. Although he did not give specific figures, Liebert says membership numbers at his clubs ramp up in the 100 days leading up to the Olympics and also during the 100 days after the Games.

Town Sports International, New York, is offering a limited edition class, UXF: London Calling Edition, in honor of the Summer Olympics. The class will combine popular Olympic sports such as rowing, boxing, gymnastics, track and weightlifting, which will be condensed into a 50-minute high-intensity circuit class. The classes, which are free to members and nonmembers, began this week in New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington Sports Clubs. " With all of the excitement mounting for the 2012 Summer Games, we wanted to inspire the public to get off the couch and hit the gym for a real-life sampling of five Olympic sports in one workout, " Morin, senior director of group exercise programming for TSI, said in a statement.

Total Woman Gym and Day Spa, Westlake Village, CA, has opened a new 12,000-square-foot club in Valencia, CA's River Oaks Shopping Center and will host its grand opening events on Sept. 17. The all-women gym and spa has hired 50 women to join the staff and will be partnering with women's organizations in the community to help raise money for local charities. Health Tech (JHT), the parent company of Cottage Grove, WI-based fitness brands such as Matrix, Vision, AFG and Horizon, has acquired Magnum Fitness, a manufacturer and marketer of strength equipment based in South Milwaukee, WI. Over the next 12 months, JHT will evaluate how to best integrate the existing Magnum team, product lines, distributors and facilities into its existing operations. Ron Carringi, who had served as a director of engineering at JHT for nine years, will serve as general manager of the manufacturing facility. " With the acquisition of Magnum, JHT now has a comprehensive commercial strength product portfolio that greatly increases the competitiveness of our product offering in adjacent channels of the commercial market, " Mark Zabel, vice president of global product development and marketing for JHT, said in a statement.

Netpulse, a San Francisco-based media and data services company, has raised $15.6 million in funding led by August Capital, with participation from current investors Javelin Venture Partners, DFJ Frontier and Parkview Ventures. Marquardt, co-founder of August Capital, will join the company's board of directors. Netpulse has partnerships with eight of the leading commercial fitness equipment manufacturers, which account for more than 75 percent of global fitness equipment sales to health clubs, according to the company. " We are excited to have August Capital and Dave Marquardt joining the Netpulse team, " Arp, Netpulse co-founder and CEO, said in a statement. " Dave has helped build some of the most well-known brands in technology, which makes him a great addition to the Netpulse team for our next phase of growth. "

The Green Fitness Equipment Co., Del Mar, CA, has hired Tina ey as its national sales director. ey has 15 years of experience providing fitness equipment to gyms, hospitality, corporate, multi-housing, and senior and medical facilities for vendors such as BH, Les Mills and Star Trac.
