If she's intimidated by I would recommend walking outside at her own pace and swimming.  You can take aqua aerobics at community centers for not too much $ and there are people of all sizes and ages there, it's a very fun and non-competitive, non-judgemental class.

another thing she can do it crank up her favorite tunes and dance at her own pace to her own rhythm.

Any recommendations for very out-of-shape beginners? She tried 's beginners walking and said she couldn't keep pace... :-( I told her to keep going at her pace, and there's no one there to see that she's out of step. I don't think she liked that answer.

Any suggestions on an easier beginning DVD?

Awesome ideas, ! My first response to that was "Intimidated by LESLIE?!" and then, "Wow, I have no idea what would be easier" but duh, these are great.

Just thought of one, maybe... it is probably only available from ebay or Amazon but Weight Watchers had a walking workout kit on DVD with a few different levels of workouts and a CD for outdoor walking. We used to sell it in the centers, it was never available on the retail market and has been discontinued for a while now. Ellen Barrett leads it and the 10 minute beginner workout had me so bored to tears I could only recommend it to people who were super sedentary and afraid to do much of anything to truly ease them into it. Even the 10 minute "power workout" was too slow for me to be able to stand even if I were ill or recovering, I think. I couldn't bear to try any of the other workouts. There's also good info about starting a walking program and things of that nature in it. That was my only exposure to Ellen and I really liked her but I was not in the target audience for this kit. Ellen was super sweet and lower key than . Some of the moves were similar to 's, some were different but it was VERY slow, VERY low intensity (probably just a few degrees above sedentary) even compared to some of 's most beginner workouts, seriously. I just found it on Amazon... http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Kit-DVD-CD-0011218/dp/B0014FWXPA.

The people that bought it really liked it a lot. This might be what you're looking for.

Whoa... I looked that one up, along with the comments... one person said it was

much too fast for a beginner, and should be called intermediate. Sheesh, I guess

he/she never met Cathe!

I check into that one a little deeper, though.

I agree, outdoor walking or (if she has access to a treadmill, so she can walk even in bad weather) would be great.

Also, for , she can just go at her own pace and not exactly follow 's pace. But I know that is a bit intimidating for a beginner.

If she has access to an outdoor bike or stationary bike (for bad weather) that would be good, too.

I think the most important part is to take it slow - baby steps and before she knows is she will be doing advanced stuff!Donna> If she's intimidated by I would recommend walking outside> at her own pace and swimming.excellent recs, laura! my advice: get a pair of decent shoes, put on some music, or an audiobook, and enjoy walking outside every day. oh, and get a fitbit !:*carolyn.------------------------------------
