I used NSAIDS fro the time I was 7 until I was 38. At first it was aspirin for migraines. In my twenties, it switched to being various NSAIDS for my joint pain and stiffnesss. I developed bleeding in my twenties then stopped for a while and when I finally developed esophageal spasms, I knew I had to give up NSAIDS. I tried Vioxx for two days and my esophageal spasms started back up again and so after that, no more NSAIDS. First of all, you take a DMARD if you can. I take plaquenil and medrol. Next, you get prescriptions fpr pain medications. There are many types including opiods and synthetic opiods. If you have nerve pain, there are both medications for neuropathic pain and the older style antidepressants like amytriptyline at very low doses do work with most people. When I was having lots of pain from my ulanr neuropathy, I was prescribed 10 mg. of Elavil ( the antidepressant dose is more like 100 mg.) and it did help a lot. With the narcotic pain medications, they do take a bit of getting used to. When I first took them, they made me sleepy but now they don't. I don't drive if I take one so I have periods of time when I have quite a lot of pain and no pain relief. I got into the habit of eating dark chocolate then . I thought that it was simply that I was trying to mask the pain by doing something pleasurable but it turns out that there are some pain relief proerties to the dark chocolate. I try to have my pain down to a level three, if I can. Even with the pain medication, I don't go below a 2. I don't take pain medication unless my pain rises to at least a five and I don't have to drive. in Belgium
