Subject: Chitosan and Cholesterol

Chitosan and Cholesterol Not only is chitosan a wonderful fat absorber, but it has a positive affect on cholesterol too. There is "good" and "bad†cholesterol. The "good" form of cholesterol is found in the form of high-density lipoproteins (HDLs). The "bad" form of cholesterol is the low-density lipoproteins (LDLs). The types of fats we eat influence how much and what type of cholesterol we make. Saturated fats are particularly good at raising low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. The more of this type of cholesterol we have floating around in our bloodstream, the greater our risk of developing atherosclerosis, heart attack and stroke. The more HDL cholesterol we have, the lower our risks of coronary heart disease. The liver is constantly trying to clear out the "bad" LDL cholesterol by dumping it into the intestines. If we have sufficient amounts of the right kind of fiber in our diets, our bodies dispose of cholesterol waste rather than reabsorbing it back into the bloodstream. If we don't eat sufficient amounts of the right kinds of fiber the cholesterol waste is reabsorbed and adds to the toxic stress on the body - especially the liver. Chitosan has the very unique ability to lower LDL cholesterol (the bad kind) while boosting HDL cholesterol (the good kind). Laboratory tests performed on rats showed that "chitosan depresses serum and liver cholesterol levels in cholesterol-fed rats without affecting performance, organ weight or the nature of the feces. Japanese researchers have concluded that Chitosan "appears to be an effective hypo-cholesterolemic agent. In other words it can effectively lower blood serum cholesterol levels with no apparent side effects. A study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that Chitosan is as effective in mammals as cholestlyramine (a cholesterol-lowering drug) in controlling blood serum cholesterol without the deleterious side effects typical of cholestryramine. Chitosan decreased levels by 66.2%. It effectively lowered cholesterol absorption more than guar gum or cellulose. Laboratory test results indicated that a 7.5% chitosan formula maintained adequate cholesterol levels in rats, despite a dramatic increase in the intake of cholesterol. A Norwegian study favors the use of chitosan as a medicine, citing: "a marked lowering in serum cholesterol, a considerable lowering in triglyceride levels; tolerability judged to be good." Chitosan has been shown in study after study to reduce what some scientists call the cholesterol pool in the body. The cholesterol factors that increase the risk of developing heart disease are: a) Total cholesterol levels greater than 200 mg per deciliter. B) LDL cholesterol levels greater than 130 mg per deciliter. c) HDL cholesterol levels that create a total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol ratio (total cholesterol divided by HDL cholesterol) greater than 4.5. d) Excess fat stores. It seems that nearly every health study done in the last decade mentions obesity and being overweight as a major health risk. Severe obesity affects the health and quality of life of millions of Americans. They suffer increased mortality and morbidity from being overweight and obese. The danger of being overweight isn't small. According to the National Institute of Health and the U.S. Surgeon General most of "the ten causes of death due to disease are attributable to health risks associated with excess body fat. One of those health risks is cholesterol. Forty million Americans have serum cholesterol levels that warrant medically supervised dietary intervention. Losing excess body fat and decreasing cholesterol levels can greatly reduce major risks to your health. Adding more potassium to the diet can lower blood pressure and a diet deprived of potassium can actually raise blood pressure gigi http://www.greatamericanproducts.com/ ============================================================
