ra and pregnancy

Hi! I am looking for any information on non-medicine relief for RA. I became pregnant 2 months ago and have stopped using all medicines (had been on metho, pred, plaquenil, and NSAIDS). I was diagnosed with RA right before my first pregnancy and with that pregnancy I went into complete remission....this time I was not so lucky and am feeling ALL of the pain everywhere. My rheumy says i need to get back on the prednisone to calm it down but i am refusing to take ANY chances with the baby and hoping to find any ideas on relief that doesn't involve complete bed rest or medicines.

Has anyone gone through this????

Ann

Hi Ann,

You could try herbal anti-inflammatories like curcumin, bromelain, yucca and

ginger. Or products like RA-SPES. Fish oil in large amounts helps many people.

Erythromycin can be taken during pregnancy as it doesn't cross the placenta

to your baby.

Chris.

I was told not to take drugs or herbs that had anti-clotting properties

when pregnant. Not sure about all of these, but bromelain and yucca would

be anti-clotting. The main concern is that they might dispose you toward

hemorraging. So I'd ask the doc before trying those. Don't forget to ask

about raspberry leaf tea also, (the kind from real raspberry bushes, not the

raspberry-flavored kind). Not for the arthritis, but for the pregnancy.

Ice packs helped me a lot, especially before my daughter's birth on the

last day of summer, after a record-heat season. But I shudder to think

about it if it was in the middle of winter when you are near-term. And gets

LOTS of rest, now and after. Yoga stretches or other gentle exercise,

meditation or other relaxation techniques, gentle massages, warm tub soaks.

And lots and lots of love around you. Liz G
