Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I'm so sorry for being MIA - I'm in a bit of a dog rescue nightmare. I've been wondering how the dog situation was going for you. I hate that things aren't 100%. Do you have Lucky too? How is that going? I say to give Luna some time. She's in a new environment so things are new to her and maybe she was never walked or around people. And it might require some additional training as well. Good luck. Hang in there with her. -:¦:-¸.·´ .·´¨¨))((¸¸.·´ ..·´ -:¦:- ~-:¦:- ((¸¸.·´*
Guest guest
I agree with - transitioning to a new home can be stressful at first. Love and discipline I'm hoping will help! I'm happy to hear you have a fuzzer again I would be a basket case without the Creamsicles! (I *hate* having to leave them in the morning!) Guest guest
Hi!Thanks, . DH and I are going to hire a trainer and work w/ her - I have to remember that Shenan wasn't a saint either. Did I mention I took her to the vet to see what her thoughts were on the dog - her reaction was the dog is basically shy/fearful - she did some work w/ her and at the end of the visit she was licking the tech's face. I guess there is hope!Donna p.S. Luna is Lucky! Guest guest
Donna, As a dog trainer, I know that can be mostly trained out of a dog, but it will take time and perseverance! Many people don't have enough of that to fully take care of the problem. I certainly hope the trainer you get uses positive reinforcement, especially with a fearful dog. A heavy hand can indeed make a dog into a fear biter very quickly. Sometimes it is impractical for a family to even try, especially if they are afraid of the dog, or just don't have the time it takes. Rehabbing a dog may take months of daily work, and the first few weeks will be very trying. There is an EXCELLENT book out especially for this type of dog, called " Control Unleashed, " by McDevitt. I strongly suggest you check it out. And I hope your trainer is familiar with it! Also, don't be afraid to say that the match isn't a good one for your family. Too often people feel they are stuck with their choice, even when it is not working out. There are many, many good dogs out there looking for good homes. If you are going to give your heart to a dog, make sure it's the right dog. Lastly, I STRONGLY recommend (for everyone) going through rescue groups rather than shelters for rescue dogs. The groups often " weed out " the problem dogs with experienced foster-families who are more interested in getting a good match to the family, rather than increasing an adoption number. My Hazel pup would have put a first-dog family through hell had she gone to someone who didn't know Aussies. And likewise, they would have messed her up badly, too. The rescue group approved her for me because I am an experienced handler who has owned many Aussies in the past, and know what type of pup I was dealing with. She was so cute as a pup, though, I think everyone would have wanted her! But few could really handle her. (I often think she deserves an even more gung-ho trainer than me--she LOVES to learn new stuff. Last week, she couldn't wait to go to class -- she jumped through my open car window when it was time to go...) Bottom line -- Rehab is possible, but it will take a lot from your family. If this is a project you want to work with, GREAT! If not, it would be better to find another dog. I look at a pet adoption as a 10-15 year investment. I want to do it right. Guest guest
I was thinking of Judy as I read that too... I don't know anything about training dogs but it did sound like great advice, thanks for posting it, Indy. Guest guest
Hi Indy, I totally agree with everything you say. I'm going to set up some time w/ a trainer and hopefully get a realistic assessment from him/her on how extensive the problem is and how much work it is going to take to fix. I'm not sure if my DH realizes that it is more than just a few classes - it is a lifestyle and a life long committment - can't backslide on the training at all and it is going to cost in terms of time and money. I think I do realize that and I think that is why I'm the only family member who is 50/50 right now on whether or not we keep the dog. It is not a short term committment - it is a lifetime for the dog. So - one day at a time, right?
