Guest guest
HI Parrish, Im 32 and was diagnosed at 26, when my WHOLE body flaired up to the point of being bed ridden and needing help washing and dressing. Been on and off of it all, or atleast it feels like it. It's under control much of the time. Unfortunatly now not being one of them!! Thats my own doing though, because I've been slacking on the doctor's oreders. Seeing that we are so close in age, feel free to ask anything. --- shine190 <shine190@...> wrote: > Hi! Guest guest
Hi, I am 30 (for about the next 15 hours!). Was diagnosed about a week ago. Earlier this summer, my wrists really started to bother me. I work a lot on the computer, so I thougth I had carpal tunnel. Went to my primary, he treated me for such. Wore the splints, iced. No difference. I also had what looked like a ganglion cyst on the top of my left wrist. No pain, just a lump. I went for xrays on my wrist. Totally normal. I then went to a rheumy. At random other points during the summer I had swelling in my right ankle (attributed it to a long distance rollerblading episode) and elbow swelling. Otherwise, not much else. My most affected areas are my index & middle finger on my right hand. Swelling and stiff. However, no limitations for use. All my bloodwork has come back negative. I had an mri this summer on my wrists, which I think showed some swelling (I honestly forget what my rheumy said). I have not started any meds (other than omega-3, turmeric powder & naproxen-on occassion). I have had no changes in daily activity. Still hit the gym each day (try to do things that don't aggraviate my joints). Minor stiffness in the am, but nothing compared to some other stories from folks. I am really have a hard time coming to terms with the fact that I might need to start meds. My first rheumy wants to start me on something (she's letting me decide). I have a 2nd opinion with anohter rheumy on the 20th. I am not going to start anything until I meet with him. I feel totally normal and cannot imagine what benefit I would get from starting any of the meds. I don't have kids yet, but we plan to someday. The risks & toxicity of some of the meds seem to outweigh any of the benefits. For me, the only potential benefit I can see is the prevention of future joint damage. Is joint damage inevitable for all with RA? I'd like to hear from you all. Anyone with a similar history to me? What did you decide? Am I being an idiot by not starting with the meds? What is everyone's long term treatment plan? Do you go on meds for the rest of your life? Or only during times of flare ups? Thanks for listening! -Parrish --- shine190 <shine190@...> wrote: > Hi! Guest guest
Parrish, I just turned 67 last month. I was lucky enough not to get RA until I was in my sixties, I think five years ago. Guest guest
Just turned 47. DX'ed at 40, but had major symptoms years before that. Right now in the middle of a major flare up. Rheumy adding a dx of Psoriatic arthritis (PA), which was cause damage to my spine/cervical vertebra. Been on Mtx since I was DX with RA, biologic caused a major infection in my hip joint. Start Avara a month ago and prendisone 20 mg daily, side effects are doing me in right now. The PA in my spine is causing me more pain than the RA in my neck, shoulders, arms and hands. Right now I just want to curl up and not deal with this any more. Too much pain. ________________________________________________________________________ Check out AOL.com today. Guest guest
I just turned 50 and have yet to develop RA. Do have my share of health problems though. When I found out I had fibro I was 36. Able to deal with it until last year when things got worse. Debbie L > > Hi all, > > I have been learning a lot from all of your posting, > thanks! Guest guest
Parrish, unlike you, my RA started off with a big bang. The pain was pretty much unbearable after a couple of months. Life with that much pain would be hard to live. So, anyhow, I was glad to start on meds, anything to get rid of the pain. It took a while to find the right med for me, and that is Enbrel. I know that I will have to take something for the rest of my life. Sometimes I can really tell when it's about time for my injection, so I know that the disease is still there, being kept under control by the Enbrel. I just hope that it keeps on being effective, and that my insurance will continue to pay most of its cost. The idea is to treat RA aggressively from the start to prevent joint damage. What does your rheumy say? Sue On Monday, September 4, 2006, at 04:36 PM, Parrish Blaszka wrote: > > I'd like to hear from you all. Anyone with a similar > history to me? What did you decide? Guest guest
Joanne, I understand your situation although I'm not at the " doughnut hole " level yet. They trap you into taking Medicare Part D. If you don't they will penalize you. I have stopped taking my cholestrol med because I'm taking Caduet for my B/P. The Caduet has Lipitor in it for cholestrol anyway. I've stopped taking Fentanyl pain patches because they cost somewhere near $300. Sure have suffered since. Especially today, we have a low pressure coming through. If I had to pay $550/month I'd have to do without food. Joyce from Texas Re: [ ] Curiosity Question I've been on meds since my diagnosis, however, none seemed to work very well until Enbrel/Humira was started a few years ago. Every now and then, I try to eliminate some of the meds, but never seem to be able to. I'm in the " doughnut hole " right now with Medicare Part D which means that I have NO drug coverage right now. The last 3 months have cost about $550/month. I'm also on meds for my blood pressure and asthma. Sorry to go off and I'm sure everyone here is very familiar with drug costs, just getting fed up and don't know how much longer I can afford to pay these prices. Best wishes for a peaceful night for all. Joanne, IL

Guest guest
Hi Parrish, I am 40 and was diagnosed with RA when I was 38, so have had it for 2 years officially, however, it took them a good six months or more to figure out what was wrong with me as my health kept deteriorating. I am seronegative by the way which I believe is more difficult to diagnosis?? Nice to meet you. Guest guest
I'm 59 and was diagnosed with RA April 2003 when I was 55. I recently sold my townhouse ( 3 levels ) in . VA and moved to Florence, SC to a home all on one level. Not having to go up and down stairs has made a large difference in my health. I've been on Humira since I was 56, weekly for almost 1 year.
