Guest guest
Regarding: Heat Treating House I have old plaster house but all the plaster is wall papered. I assume the wall paper also being old wouldn't fair well. Do you know if wallpaper goes through this system okay? If not, I guess it can all be scraped off and walls painted. Some of it is flocked so probably holding dust mites anyway. Thanks, barb > > Bob: > > A great way to kill dust mites is to raise the temperature to 140F and hold
Guest guest
Research shows that dust mites are controlled by maintaining <50%RH throughout the summer. This is very comfortable and also deals other biological growth. http://www.respiratoryreviews.com/jul00/rr_jul00_allergenabate.html Re: Dust Mites /HEAT TREATMENT Regarding: Heat Treating House I have old plaster house but all the plaster is wall papered. Guest guest
Barb: I’ve heat treated a number of old, historic homes, but I can’t recall if they had wallpaper. My gut feeling is that the high temperature may affect the wallpaper’s adhesion to the plaster wall’s surface, and it my begin to peel. But I am not sure. A test room may be necessary before proceeding on a larger scale. -- Geyer, PE, CIH, CSP President KERNTEC Industries, Inc. Guest guest
Ken, Here's a pleasant thought: While it is true that dust mites in carpets can be controlled with dehumidification, it is also true that there is no way to reduce the RH under one's rump when sitting on a cushioned surface or lying in bed. The RH goes to over 80%, regardless of the ambient humidity. Thus, mite activity can be significant wherever couch potatoes lounge or folks sit in front of a computer screen all day. As soon as the " moisture source " gets up, the surface RH and temperature drop and the mites congregate in clumps within the cushion to conserve body moisture and await the arrival of next warm body. ly, I only sit on leather in my office and at home (and on wood when I visit). We also have some futons, but the mattresses are encased in non-permeable mite covers. (The mites within a mattress must laugh when the new, woven-cotton encasings are put on; these highly porous " covers " allow all the body moisture to pass right into their home.) C.
