Guest guest
This is for GFCF, right? The main reason most people avoid soy when doing the GFCF diet is because the protein structure of soy is not that different from gluten and casein. So a lot of kids who are reacting to G & C also react to soy. Therefore, if you replace dairy with soy, you may not see an improvement and think that the diet isn't helping. Rice is better as far as this diet goes, but keep in mind that all it is is a calcium supplement, basically. Rice milk does not provide fat or protein. I don't know how old Hannah is, but I'm assuming over 2, so the fat isn't as much of a concern...just something to keep in mind. There is also Darifree as an alternative, made from potatoes and corn. I haven't tried it as corn was one of my son's allergies, but I understand it's pretty good and better as a baking substitute than rice milk is. It's hard to find in stores, but you can order it online at http://www.vancesfoods.com/ Amnesty > > Hi everyone, > > It's just me, , the new one; your student. > > Since I am eliminating dairy first for Hannah, I've seen that rice milk > is a good alternative but what is bad about soy? Guest guest
Rice Dream contains gluten. Only .02% but it's still in there. Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Pacific Rice all make gluten free rice milk. Guest guest
Amy, Thank you. I really am trying to do my research; this is one of the many places I'm trying to get info; not just analytical data, but real life info. I don't think you meant to offend me (I'm overly sensitive!) but I am so darn new to this and so overwhelmed. My DAN! doc has me starting with dairy. Eventually, yes, the GFCF I am guessing will happen. I'm just overwhelmed and trying to stay afloat. Thanks for your input. > Hi everyone, > > It's just me, , the new one; your student. > > Since I am eliminating dairy first for Hannah, I've seen that rice milk > is a good alternative but what is bad about soy? Guest guest
Thank you. I will try those on her. What are the dangers of soy? I will google it as well, but you all seem to have this knowledge before the click of a mouse can even happen! > > Hi everyone, > > > > It's just me, , the new one; your student. > > > > Since I am eliminating dairy first for Hannah, I've seen that rice milk > > is a good alternative but what is bad about soy? Guest guest
Thank you. Like I said, I'm far too new. I have to figure out what the heck Casein even is. I know that compared to everyone here, I must sound like a blazing idiot. I'm sorry. Just really new! Hannah is 8 years old. She's 50 1/2 inches tall and finally broke 50 lbs last month. She's very thin. I want to do all the right things that I can but there's so much controversy no matter what the subject is. That's why I like to read others' opinions and experiences. Guest guest
I'm sorry (again) but did I miss something? I didn't see on this particular thread. Trying to keep up with all of the threads, four kids, a cranky husband and maintain my sanity is really catching up with me. I am on the verge of a breakdown that I don't have time for. > Hi everyone, > > It's just me, , the new one; your student. > > Since I am eliminating dairy first for Hannah, I've seen that rice milk > is a good alternative but what is bad about soy? Guest guest
Do not feel " stupid " ! It is a lot to take in!!! The way I remembered about casein is that casein is made in mammals milk. Soooo...cow's milk-casein, goat's milk-casein, whale's milk- casein, mother's milk-casein. Therefore, anything made from milk also has casein. Sooo...eggs are casein free (although many people eliminate them anyway) Yogurt, cheese etc. all have casein. I hope that helps a little. That is how someone explained it to me and I am probably the idiot. All the best, Rochelle Re: Soy? Bad or okay? Thank you. Like I said, I'm far too new. Guest guest
Rochelle, Thanks so much. I'm almost starting to feel like I don't belong here. I'm just learning and all of the lingo, acronyms, etc., are hard enough! After so many years of problems and misdiagnoses, for me and my daughter, it's just scary. We are doing the sublingual yeast treatment to start (by the way, my mother almost died last February due to Candida Sepsis and then had the same sepsis in November). Hannah is also taking diflucan as well. Her DAN doc wants to go one step at a time. That's probably a good thing because this mom is on overload. > > > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > > > > > It's just me, , the new one; your student. > > > > > > > > Since I am eliminating dairy first for Hannah, I've seen that > > rice milk > > > > is a good alternative but what is bad about soy?
Guest guest
, Any help I can offer you I will be here. It is so much to take in. I am sure that your daughter will be fine but, it sounds like taking it slowly is a good idea. My daughter is only 2 and we went GFCF about 6 mos ago (right after her dx) We noticed changes fairly quickly. I am starting to add a little wheat to see if there is any difference but, I know casein is not for her so I am sure she will be CF forever. Just remember that you are a good mom and trying to do all you can for your precious daughter and as fast as we want everything to change it just does not happen that way. If you take it slow you will notice the small progressions as well as set backs and you will truly see what is helping (or not) That is why I wish we had gone CF 1st then GF so we could see which one (if any) made the difference. Guest guest
It is a lot to learn! And some of us have been learning it for years Casein is one of the two proteins found in milk. The other protein is whey. But, it doesn't really matter because if you are avoiding one, you should avoid both because there is no 100% sure way to separate them and there is always a risk of cross contamination. There is a lot of controversy, but that is mostly because no one thing works for everyone. The only way to know if the GFCF diet will work for Hannah is to give it a try And the nice thing about the diet is that it is pretty non-invasive and easy to reverse if it isn't working. Which is why I always tell parents to try it first (but not at the beginning of their ABA program, lol, one intervention at a time!) Guest guest
Well, true and not true. All milk has casein, but every mammal's casein is a little different. Which is why 8% of people who are allergic to cow's milk aren't allergic to goat's, lol. Also why it is still ok to continue breastfeeding children with milk allergies (as long as the mother isn't eating cow's milk). Eggs come from chickens, which aren't even mammals, so I never know why people relate them to dairy...I guess because they are next to each other in the grocery store, lol. Guest guest
Well, true and not true. All milk has casein, but every mammal's casein is a little different. Which is why 8% of people who are allergic to cow's milk aren't allergic to goat's, lol. Guest guest
So that's another thing I don't know about; the ABA program. Hannah is eight and newly diagnosed so she doesn't qualify for early intervention type of things. So I'm going at this blindly. I don't know what agencies can help her because she is too old. And can anyone tell me where this magic age of 8 comes from? I know there's lots of kids who are lost in the cracks and are misdiagnosed for many years. Just like my baby. Thanks so much! > > > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > > > > > It's just me, , the new one; your student. > > > > > > > > Since I am eliminating dairy first for Hannah, I've seen that > > rice milk > > > > is a good alternative but what is bad about soy?
