Guest guest
I did it in an unconventional manner. I had a hall bathroom at the time, which only had a sink and toilet in it. There was barely room for her to sit on the toilet and me to sit on the floor. Anyway, we would go in there for long periods of time. I would read to her (any book) and she would sit on the toilet. When she went I would throw the biggest happy dance and hugs and kisses, so much praise. We would go in the bath alot during the day. Also, Kayla had always come in to the bathroom with me so she knew what I was doing. We did this for about a week. It worked. She didn't need the pullups anymore. She was almost 5 at the time. I threw all the pullups away and got big girl undies. I didn't work at the time and this was my main priority. Guest guest
Well, my daughter is not 19, but she is 6 and when you are changing a 6 yr old, a 4 yr old and a 2.5 yr old who have Crohn's like symptoms like their dad and are going Poop about 3 times or more each a day, you would do ANYTHING to get them to do this one task on their own and believe me I have prayed. My kids are certainly smart enough to do it, they are just the most stubborn kids you ever met. Both my 6 and 4 yr old, can change their own wet diapers entirely on their own, but yet refuse to go in the toilet, and my 6 yr old, I have been making her change her own poopy diaper too. Of course I am right there and have to help her wipe herself. But I told her that it is Chantelle's job now and she is a big girl now. She scrunched up her face and said, " No, not Chantelle's job, poopy mommy's job, poopy yucky! " K if she can say that and clean her own bum she is plenty smart to go on the toilet, she just does not like change. I have tried taking away the diapers, in fact one day between paychacks we ran out of pull ups and I had panties on both girls and I never got a single thing done from cleaning up the messes. It lasted like that for 3 days before I could afford to get more, and I thought if I just kept trying it would work, but my 6 yr old help her bowel movements all three days and as soon as I put that diaper on her she ran to the corner and pooped. She has gone on the toilet before, when I have caught her in the corner and sat her on the toilet. I have praised her, celebrated, I even gave her a new doll that I had planned on giving her at Christmas. It didn't matter, she still refuses and actually has verbal fights with me about it. I am still trying though and won't give up. I have a printed out version of the book on it that I am publishing soon and she has it totally memorised step by step of how to go potty, but will she? No! SHe says, " Little girl go poopy in toilet, Chantelle go poopy in diaper " . Grrrrrrr, why do my kids have to be so dang stubborn! Oh well, at least she is talking now and that is a huge improvement. Guest guest
Esther -- I don't know if this would work or not, but you could take Chantelle to the hardware store and let her pick out a fancy toilet seat for her and her sibs to use. My kids picked out a clear blue one with fish in it -- it's very gaudy but they love it. I also let them paint the walls -- I painted the walls white then let them stencil on sea horses in whatever color they wanted. I expect you've already tried a rewards chart -- that works for us for some things -- make a chart (decorate it how they'd like) and they have to earn their super faboulous reward by doing the desired thing many times -- when they fill up one chart, make another. (We made a giant Ninja turtle and marked of squares on his chestplate -- it took 36 successes to earn him $5.00 and a trip to the toy store to spend it -- definately cheap! Then he got to make the second chart and do it all over again.) Good luck! I know what you mean though -- when I was potty-triaing three kids at a time some days I felt like I'd been dipped in poop! I estimated how many wipes I used in a week and realized that each time my hand was on the other side of the wipe -- I totally depressed myself! -- Cassie Esther wrote: > Well, my daughter is not 19, but she is 6 and when you > are changing a 6 yr old, a 4 yr old and a 2.5 yr old > who have Crohn's like symptoms like their dad and are > going Poop about 3 times or more each a day, you would > do ANYTHING to get them to do this one task on their > own and believe me I have prayed. > My kids are certainly smart enough to do it, they are > just the most stubborn kids you ever met. Guest guest
My daughter will be 11 next month and she won't use the potty either. I have tried everything. I was told if you reward them they will go but it didn't work for britt. I bought a book that says they can have your autistic child potty trained. Everything I have tried hasn't worked. I have read that it's like everything else they don't like change and some never go potty. I still work with her. I wish she would go in the potty but if she doesn't she doesn't. It's funny though with Britt, she will hold it at school and pee her pants as soon as she gets off the bus. But the one time her dad got her off the bus she didn't go till I got home to change her. She pees at school but rarely. She has never had a bowel movement at school. She only wants me to change her. Which I understand to a point because I am sure it's embarrising for her. She is comfortable with me. I am worried about when she starts her period. I don't know what I am going to do to help her deal with that. Do any of you have daughters who have started there period. I am dredding it. I was 11 when I started my period and I have a rough time with mine. I hope she doesn't have the same problem. She doesn't even understand so I am just not looking forward to that one. Can any of you that have already been through this help me be prepared. She is still in diapers so what do you do. Any help with that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!! Re: Potty training? I understand that your children are much younger and I wish you the very best with potty training. Jen has done amazing tasks in her time that only an extremely intelligent individual would be capable of, which is very typical of some autistic, yet the basic task and what some perceive simple tasks elude Jen. She typed computer programs for me that I needed to solve a problem, she has shut down computer systems when I told them to watch her and some individual with inflated egos told me that a cute little autistic girl could not do anything to hurt their computers. I can remember when Jen was somewhere about 5 to 7 years old and others adults keep asking, " When are you going to potty train her? " In total frustration, I stated " I am not super mom " and at that point I came to a realization, that it was not my choice, but Jen had to be potty training ready. I continue to go through the motions of potty training, but the truth she will potty train when she is ready. I am only telling you what happened to my daughter and wishing to you the very best in potty training, but the truth is some autistic never potty train. A doctor once told me that Jen might potty training at 7 years old, and I have no idea where he came up with that number. A language specialist told me language and potty training are related. Someone along the way told me that it has to do with a lack of awareness. I wish I knew the answer to Jen potty training. I have bought potty training film, reward sticker for potty training, I have used a variety of schedules and I purchased the big girl panties, but she just did not potty train. I guess it comes down to Jen being ready and then she potty training. I still not super mom, but I am a great deal happier with my realizations. Best wishes in potty training. Guest guest
Hi , My daughter has not started her period yet. She is 9. But I know someone who has a 13 year old and she takes her to the doctor every three months to get a shot, so that she doesn't have a period. I can't remember what it is called. I don't know if you want to do that or not. I just thought I would share the information with you. wrote: My daughter will be 11 next month and she won't use the potty either. Guest guest
, You freaked me out a bit. My name is too and I have a daughter that is turning 11 in two weeks. She is no longer in diapers, but I still have BM accidents at times, and she is unable to clean herself properly when she does have one in the toilet. I too, am terrified when she gets her period, but she does not understand either. We are working on getting her to tolerate wearing a panty liner, and then we are working our way up from there. The moods are starting already though!!To: Autism_in_Girls@...: brittanysmommy97@...: Sat, 5 Jan 2008 21:49:06 -0800Subject: Re: Re: Potty training? I don't know what I am going to do to help herdeal with that. Thanks!!! She typed computer programs for me that I needed to solve aproblem, she has shut down computer systems when I told them to watchher and some individual with inflated egos told me that a cute littleautistic girl could not do anything to hurt their computers.I can remember when Jen was somewhere about 5 to 7 years old andothers adults keep asking, " When are you going to potty train her? " Intotal frustration, I stated " I am not super mom " and at that point Icame to a realization, that it was not my choice, but Jen had to bepotty training ready. I continue to go through the motions of pottytraining, but the truth she will potty train when she is ready. I amonly telling you what happened to my daughter and wishing to you thevery best in potty training, but the truth is some autistic neverpotty train. A doctor once told me that Jen might potty training at 7 years old,and I have no idea where he came up with that number. A languagespecialist told me language and potty training are related. Someonealong the way told me that it has to do with a lack of awareness. Iwish I knew the answer to Jen potty training.I have bought potty training film, reward sticker for potty training,I have used a variety of schedules and I purchased the big girlpanties, but she just did not potty train.I guess it comes down to Jen being ready and then she potty training.I still not super mom, but I am a great deal happier with myrealizations. Guest guest
Depo is VERY bad. I wouldn't give it to your daughters just to make life a little less messy. Though I can see how tempting it would be. Since my daughter is potty trained my heart goes out to those mothers that are still struggling with this issue. On the days were my Serena's quirks are annoying me I know I can come on here and get an attitude adjustment. I feel very lucky that I don't have to deal with these issues.
