Guest guest
I have done extensive research on this topic. I can't find my links but I know they are out there. There are basically 3 clinical reasons I have found for low oral temps. 1 - you are a mouth breather and the heat is not captured orally 2 - you have deep veins and the heat is not accurate in the mouth 3 - you have some chemical makeup that prevents the oral reading from being accurate. My oral temp is anywhere from 96.7 - 97.4 and seldom higher than that no matter what. My PCP had me take my ear thermometer to her office. She used hers, I used mine. We were 0.1 degree different in temps. So, the decision was made that I will use the ear thermometer to do my reading and always use it so my results are consistant. I did the mouth, temporal, ear, under arm, rectal readings once, almost all at the same time to see how they measured up. I took the results to my doctor. All the results were " spot on " with each other except the oral temp. It was way off. I think I may have all 3 of the above issues but who cares. As long as we know where to get an accurate reading. I mean, my temp is always low, but I know it's high when it says 98 or 99 -- for me at least (docs dismiss it of course). So maybe if i took it in my ear, or god forbid, my rear, it would be more accurate???
