Guest guest
Please ask the doc first here are just some of my thoughts.....Driving in the car causes a decrease in circulation so swelling may increase. ....Also..eating out has so much more salt than we normally eat ,so your body may have extra fluid in it. If the doctor agrees maybe you can try to walk a bit every hour or so...and eat some apples and home made sandwhiches...Ok that's just a thought. Travel although fun ,causes stress and may make the disease poke its face out the window....grrrrrrrr...Hugs Liz NJ

Marty -- Swollen Ankles Hello one and all... We've just returned from a whirlwind trip down south to San Diego, up through Orange County, a stop in Morro Bay and on home to the central valley. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced really swollen ankles?
Guest guest
Ok Sam when you find out let me know .My ankles have been like that for about three months now. I showd one of my doctors and he said it might be water retension. I don't think so. Sometimes they don't hurt but feel funny and other times they hurt alot. When yours gets better, let me know what you did. hugs; paulette Sam Rocci wrote: Hello one and all... I am wondering if anyone else has experienced really swollen ankles? They seem to have swelled up while we were driving. It's weird because I was able to keep up with the kids through LegoLand, the museums, the beach and all without too much pain (a vicodin here and there)... it was the sitting in the car that got me... They really hurt and are still very puffy. My hands are a bit puffy as well. I thought maybe it was not drinking enough water so I stopped at Costco and bought a case of arrowhead bottles and have been powering them down. Any suggestions for getting them to un-swell? Thanks! Guest guest
Hi Sam and others; I have been plagued with swollen ankles while traveling and on my feet a lot for years. Ask your doctor what may be causing it because there are several reasons not to scare you, but DVT or (clot) among them. I was perscribed to put them up above my heart and also I wear those adorable white stockings at times, called ted hose. The most important thing is not to self diagnose but ask your doctor and putting them up can't hurt. Hope this helps, Melt ----- Original Message ----- From: Sam Rocci Hello one and all... Guest guest
Hi Sam, I have a lot of problems with swollen ankles. Partly due to breaking both of them. Partly due to permanent tendinitis. Elevating helps and so do the white " lovely looking " compression stockings (hose). I use them while elevating my feet when they are swollen. The ankle swelling goes down faster with them. They also make some that look more like regular hosiery and trouser socks. It is also good to wear them when you going to be on your feet a lot and especially when traveling by airplane to help prevent DVT (Deep Venous Thrombosis). I learned a lesson the hard way about not being embarrassed to wear them. I developed blood-clots in a long plane flight. So between high doses of prednisone making me more susceptible to blood clots and the long plane trip, I developed avascular necrosis in both hips with edema in the bone marrow. I would wear those hose any day now. You don't have to be elderly to need them. Maybe check with your doctor. And you can get the hose at a medical supply store or through a travel clothing catalogue. Mandy Sam Rocci wrote: Hello one and all... Guest guest
Thank you Melt, I doubt it's a blood clot because they don't hurt but just get really big. Guest guest
I'm sorry to disagree Ginger. Mine hurt like I had pulled a muscle in the calf of the leg. This is why it's so important to see a doctor for diagnoses. Melt Re: Swollen Ankles Thank you Melt, I doubt it's a blood clot because they don't hurt but just get really big. Guest guest
Sorry what I ment to say was mine doesn't hurt but my legs do swell too at times. If I keep walking on the ankles then it will go up the leg too but mostley it's just the ankles and they don't hurt just get big. I will call my doctor anyway. I don't need another thing to come on me as I have too many already. Hugs; ginger mellymelt wrote: I'm sorry to disagree Ginger. Mine hurt like I had pulled a muscle in the calf of the leg. Guest guest
Hi Sam; Sincere apologies for the late response. I'm glad you had a fun vacation, but so sorry it was punishing. Travel is hard on me, too, even when I spend most of the trip sleeping. As Melt said, be sure to talk to your doctor. Swollen ankles may be a sign of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). The chance of that being the problem is unlikely. When one has CHF there may be narrowing of the arteries, heart valve disease due to Rheumatic Fever in childhood, or an overload of fluid in the system and the heart can't pump effectively. Because the heart can't keep up with the overload, fluid leaks out and creates edema (swelling) in the extremities. Walking is good, as is limiting intake of fluid, and your physician may prescribe a diuretic. Talk to your physician first. Many people live with CHF for decades. I take a diuretic, but don't have CHF. This is just one possibility for edema in the extremities, and an unlikely one. When our son got married 16 years ago, it was in the desert during the summer. No air conditioning in the church, and the reception was in his Aunt's backyard. Back then, I wore heels for those occasions. Not good for a bad back, bad hips, or bad knees. Before the end of the day I was swollen badly in my feet, ankles, lower legs, hands, and wrists. I didn't have CHF, the traveling, heat, and walking (especially in heels) was just too much for me. The cold is very difficult for some Stills victims, for me, and many others, it is the heat. Wearing the right shoes is very important for many of us, too. It took me forever to find a couple of good brands, finally did, and I stick with those brands. They aren't always the most attractive shoes, and are expensive, so I make them last for years. If you can, keep your legs elevated when resting. Let us know what your physician has to say after your appointment. Be kind to yourself! Much love, Barbara Gardner Ventura, CA
