NSAIDs and ulcers

I've been taking Aleve, two tablets twice a day, for four months. For

those of you who developed stomach problems/ulcers, how much were you

taking and for how long? I wonder if I should get off the Aleve and

switch to another NSAID, such as Motrin. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Peptic (bleeding) ulcers are not caused by stomach irritation. Bleeding

ulcers are caused by a bacteria called Helicobacter Pylori that gets

colonized in the stomach and causes the ulcer. It is successfully treated

with anti biotics like Flagyl and Amoxcillin in tandem and a PPI like

Prevacid or Prilosec or sometimes Pepto Bismol over a short period.

This discovery won the discoverers the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2005.

HI,

I just wanted to mention that not all ulcers are caused by the HP

bacteria. Some are caused by NSAIDs. My husband had bleeding ulcers,

both peptic and duodenal, and his test for the bacteria was negative.

The doctor told him to avoid Advil since his stomach apparently was

sensitive to it and that was the cause of his ulcers.

Take care,

I was taking two tablets twice a day and had been for several months

when I got the bleeding ulcer. But that doesn't mean that it will give

you an ulcer. We are all so different. As long as you get a CBC

(complete blood count) periodically, you should be okay. The CBC should

show any bleeding.

, I beg to differ. Not all ulcers are caused by the bacteria. When

I had the bleeding ulcer from Aleve, I was tested for the h. pylori

bacteria, but did not have it.

HI Meg,

Aren't you able to take a rx NSAID? I can't tolerate Motrin or Aleve

unless I take it with food. In the past I was on rx Relafen but

developed the h. pylori bacteria in my stomach. Then my meds have been

switched a few more times for insurance. The best rx one was Nexium

since it helped my stomach best. I do have chronic gastris so it gets

irritate easily. Now I take Lodine which my GI doctor recommended.

Good luck,
