Guest guest
Isn't that the truth! I look back at how much our life has changed since the " puberty onset of this darn OCD " . We never have company over anymore - we are all so drained...but no one understands! We have pulled away from friends... The thing is, if I look back one year ago, things have much improved - They really have, I wonder how we survived those long nights! I guess the negative effects on the family are just OCD's colateral damage. > > Hi Bj, I hope you are feeling a little better today. There is no way to > explain what ocd does to our lives. Guest guest
Jodi, you hit the nail on the head! I can so relate. And I have to say that I didn't even realize my child had OCD until she hit puberty, although she has had it a long time. The compulsions did not get bad until she started puberty. I might join you in flipping out too if another family member tells me not to baby my child. I don't baby her, but I am sensitive to her. If they only knew!!! Take care guys and have a Happy New Year!!! > > Hi Bj, I hope you are feeling a little better today. There is no way to > explain what ocd does to our lives. Guest guest
How old is your son, Jodi? Our son worsened at the age of 14. It took us quite a long time, but we got it sort of under control, and he got his life back for the most part. So, personally, we experienced things worsening when he was in his young teens. Oh yes. . I've heard of a lot of those same things from family. They don't live it, so they just don't understand. I think even these therapists who advise us, and them, would have some trouble living this lifestyle, being " in the trenches " day after day. It's exhausting for all involved. Hang in there, Jodi. I know it's hard. (((hugs to you))) BJ > > Hi Bj, I hope you are feeling a little better today. There is no way to > explain what ocd does to our lives. Guest guest
Thanks, . Our school district is a tough one to deal with and budgets are super tight. It's a huge district (250+ schools) but that means dealing with more " gatekeepers " and a lot of political nonsense. In my opinion, my son's case is pretty straightforward, especially with his multiple conditions, but guaranteed they will try their best to find loopholes and other reasoning not to fund him. These therapeutic boarding schools are an absolute fortune and there's no way we'll be able to swing it unless it's funded. I have a consultation with a special ed attorney on Monday to see what they think our chances are and I'll go from there. > , I would think you would have a good chance for the funding, with the > Dr. recommendation and the fact he is coming out of this program. Guest guest
Wow, , that is wonderful news! I guess what comes to mind is that YOU endured the anxiety and sure enough, things got better. Sometimes it seems like we parents have to go through our own set of ERPs in all this. Update on my son - when I presented ideas for ERP, he looked so worn out and discouraged. He really got down with doing all that the therapist asked, and nothing got better. I called ER and treatment center again - got a most helpful person at ER. She described the whole process, no preauthorization needed, ER exam would be pretty low key. He actually could be in the center with 5-6 hours of leaving home. Wouldn't have to change if he couldn't before getting there. So we will probably be going that route next week. Rhonda
Guest guest
Great news!!! Update Wanted to post a little bit of good news, for once! It's been a month now since my son was admitted to 's. Fingers (and toes!) crossed that this continues, but he gained 2 lbs. this past week, yay! The have implemented a " scaled eating plant, " the way it works is if he eats 50% of his meal he drinks a full Ensure, 75% of meal, 1/2 Ensure, and 100% of meal eaten, no Ensure. He's not loving the plan (or the Ensure!), but seems to be managing okay so far. He said that the showers are getting a little less stressful for him, which is huge. They are still very difficult, but the fact that he said they are a little less stressful is a big deal. He has to take showers every other day now. He's still struggling a lot with his tics and yesterday he told me his tic is changing and he's stuttering and holding his breath, so that's not wonderful, but hopefully it will pass soon. His tics seem to change every few months or so on average and we never know what's next on the tic agenda! He isn't yet able to participate in group therapy or go down to the cafeteria to eat with the kids because it's too stressful, but he did give a try to going outside for experiential therapy a few times this week, which is great. He's moving at a snail's pace, but at least he seems to be going in the right direction The national Tourette's association is having their bi-annual conference right here in town next week and I am so looking forward to going! It will be a great opportunity for me to meet some specialists and attend seminars on TS as well as gather information and meet other parents and kids with TS. My next big hurdle is having to approach our school district to hopefully obtain funding for my son to attend a therapeutic boarding school this fall. Although we don't know for sure at this juncture if he'll need it, 's feels it's a pretty likely scenario so I have to hop on it immediately if there is any hope of obtaining funding. Guest guest
, so happy to hear he's gained some weight! I'm sure he's glad too, so may help to motivate him more now that he's seen that progress! I hate that his tics change so much, that in itself has to be frustrating, especially when they change to a " worse " type one. I'm sure you're enjoy that Tourettes conference, perfect that they are having it there at this time of need! I guess in the school plan, just make sure you emphasize what he HAS to have to succeed, best environment for him, and thus have to show that they can't provide it at any of the schools in your town.... Thanks for the update, > > Wanted to post a little bit of good news, for once! It's been a month now since my son was admitted to 's. Guest guest
Thanks, Chris. Yeah, the tic morphing, is not fun for anyone, especially my son. Considering what this poor kid has gone through, I'm just so grateful that he's managed to keep his head above water (barely!). As far as the school situation, IMO it seems pretty straightforward that there is no possible way any public school could accommodate him, nor even a private school for that matter. I think the difficulty will be in the district agreeing to fund a school that we feel is best for him, versus what they do. What we do have in our favor is the fact that they clearly violated procedures with my son's IEP, accommodations, etc., which was documented in his psycho-educational evaluation we had done a year ago. I have an appt. with a special ed attorney on Monday for a consult, so I'm hoping she feels we have a fairly straightforward case. I'll keep you posted, > , so happy to hear he's gained some weight! Was great to see him, he is continuing to make progress, however he still has a LONG way to go. Seeing him again this weekend just further confirmed why there's absolutely NO WAY he can be moved at this juncture. He's holding steady now at 118 lbs., which is certainly much better than 107, but he started at 135. So it's not horrible, but it's not wonderful either. There is no question in my mind that if he were moved now he would get down to a skeletal weight in no time flat (among other things) and it would be life threatening for him. I'm meeting with a patient advocate tomorrow afternoon I found through a friend of a friend, so we'll see how it goes. She recently dealt with a case involving Tourettic OCD, so her researcher has already complied a lot of information on treatment modalities, effectiveness, etc. My son definitely falls into the Tourettic OCD category, so I think this will be very helpful for his case. Guest guest
Thanks, ! Well, when it rains it pours......on top of everything else, my little dog (3 year old terrier mix) who has had no health issues whatsoever, was throwing up all night and bloody diahrea. She's now hospitalized at the vet and the bill will be a few thousand by the time we're done! Then, today as I'm driving to meet with the advocate to help me with my son's case, a deer darts out in the road, I swerve to avoid it and sideswiped a huge tree branch sticking out near the road. Totally smashed in my right front fender on a 3 month old car! Okay, I am now WAY over my quota!! If anything else comes my way I'm going to have to pass it on to someone else, this is just getting beyond ridiculous! > Hang in there, . Guest guest
Thanks, Rhonda! Toadd to the already lovely mix, I wake up this morning and go to the bathroom to find major blood in my urine. No pain, no warning, no nothing, just out of nowhere, scared the holy heck out of me!! I've had bladder infections before, but always precipitated with severe burning pain and never blood in the urine like I saw this morning. Thank God it is hopefully just a bladder infection and I'm now on antibiotics, but I'm on a serious roll here!!!!!!! > Oh my goodness , I'm so glad you are okay! That reminds me of when my children were small and I was taking them to the hospital to visit their dad, who just had a ruptured appendix, and one of the wheels on our car literally fell off as I was driving. I hope you can get things put back together! > Rhonda > > Re: Update > > Thanks, ! > >
Guest guest
Hooray, hooray, hooray!!!! You go girl! (and dad! didn't he talk to his employer?) You aren't gonna have to " appeal " every week are you, did they say how long they have extended coverage? (in other words, how frequent the denials may come?) Is that advocate able to help with the school funding stuff? Be proud, you fought and won! And so happy that you son has made such progress so far, though still a long road; hopefully the speed picks up once he gets past more of the initial things they are working on. > > Well.........after 2 weeks of fighting this thing 24/7, I can finally exhale!! Thankfully the denial of coverage for my son was overturned! I am beyond thrilled, but unfortunately we are not out of the woods by any means. Guest guest
Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!! You must be so relieved . Although not over, as you say, at least you know what you need to do now, and you've gone up against Goliath and won so can again! I've heard the same about insurance, even from an insurance adjuster for a car accident medical claim. Think they count on most just walking away. Good words of advice, never just accept their rejection. Warmly, Barb > > Well.........after 2 weeks of fighting this thing 24/7, I can finally exhale!! Once a denial takes place, despite the fact that this one was completely unfounded and bogus, Blue Cross will most likely keep trying to deny moving forward. However, they now have in their possession all of my sons medical records as well as video clips, photos, etc. that I submitted along with a gazillion emails that point out their negligence and carelessness in this case. Of course they will never admit to that, but prior to this whole situation they had no records or documentation to refer to. Pretty hard to believe, but true. > > The moral to this story......never, ever take a denial of coverage for face value. Read every word of the letter 10 times over to make sure you clearly understand what they are stating for the denial reasons and criteria. The majority of the time insurance companies take a roll of the dice and figure most people won't pay attention to the verbage or pursue anything, and unfortunately they are right. > > Okay, now to prepare for the next battle.......school funding from our district! > > >
Guest guest
Thanks, Chris!! Dad did talk to his employer but they were completely useless. It's a very large company (10,000+) and he is a sales manager, so he is pretty well known, but bottom line, when push comes to shove, they simply don't give a you know what. I communicated several times with the HR person and she thought she could pull one over on me by telling me that there is " nothing they can do " that she talked with BC and we have to go through the appeals process. I found out for a fact that is complete BS and called her on it. I told her that I know they have the ultimate authority to immediately overturn this or any other denial of coverage of insurance dispute with a phone call I am hoping that we won't have to appeal every week, but it's not out the question since this was such a huge ordeal and I ruffled many, many feathers at BC. On the other hand, maybe because I did ruffle so many feathers they also won't want to have to go through this every 7 days, but I'm not counting on that. They are covering us until June 6th, which is actually, believe it or not, longer than usual. They usually just approve coverage 7 days at a time, so this is for 14 days, but then God only knows what will happen on June 6th. The advocate doesn't do school stuff unfortunately, that is an entirely different ball game. When all of this is behind me (if I live that long!!! LOL) I may try getting into some type of advocacy or research work. I'm not sure what because there are so many things I'd want to tackle, but all I know is that I do not want any other parent with a special needs child to have to suffer and deal with this crap, none of it should be happening, period!! > Hooray, hooray, hooray!!!! Guest guest
, I am so happy to read this!!! Congratulations....your effort and work on this clearly made a difference and I'm sure will make it waayy more difficult for BC to deny future claims from your son. The documentation totally backs you up. Whew...you must feel like you just climbed Everest! Lee Update Well.........after 2 weeks of fighting this thing 24/7, I can finally exhale!! Guest guest
Thanks, Barb. Yes, I am so relieved, believe me! To have that kind of financial issue looming overhead, not to mention the thought of your very sick child having to be removed from the only facility that can help him, was a lot to handle. There was absolutely no way I would have allowed him to be discharged. I don't know what I would have done and what I'll do moving forward when this happens again, but at least I am armed now with a lot more knowledge I had before this all began and BC is also armed with a lot more info about my son than they had before. I've had to fight my whole life in one form or another to get through adversities. Although they were very unpleasant and painful to go through and I wouldn't want to deal with them again, without those experiences I would not have never acquired the tools and " fighting " skills I have today. Like my mom always tells me, it's like you have to wake up every morning with your boxing gloves on prepared to fight, and I think that holds especially true for any parent of a special needs child. > Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!
