If it were to show up milk sales from my farm would be halted. This is the standard line in prenatal literature: avoid raw dairy, soft cheeses, and raw/rare meats and seafood. Has anyone offered a rebuttal to this advice regarding raw milk that specifically addresses the Listeria issue? Thanks in advance, Jim PLEASE BE KIND AND TRIM YOUR POSTS WHEN REPLYING! Guest guest
Life is not without risk. Here is a link to an article in the New England Journal of Medicine where PASTEURIZED milk was the vehicle for a Listeria outbreak. See http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/abstract/312/7/404 Now given that both could be a possible agent, which would she prefer, one that has not had its enzyme and Listeria fighting bacteria compromised by heating and homogenization or one that has? Guest guest
Also, according to the FDA, there has never been a case of fresh milk- linked listeriosis in the US. In other countries, yes, but not here. I will look for the article (published by the FDA itsself) when I get a chance. And there's this quote: " One recent study of European washed-rind cheeses found almost twice as much Listeria in the pasteurized samples than in the raw-milk samples. " from this article: http://www.specialtyfood.com/do/news/ViewNewsArticle?id=1841 All you have to do is a little digging on the internet to see that it's fear mongering. Rae.
