Guest guest
Thanks to all who responded to my previous message. After I called all my doctors to determine which medication may be causing the hair loss, it was decided it was * probably * the Arava. I am now taking Leucovorin once a week which does seem to stop the drastic hair loss for a couple of days. As long as the Arava allows me to be pain-free, I'd be happy to be bald. [Actually, baldness would be easier for me to be able to put cream/lotion on the scalp psoriasis!]
Guest guest
Hello, My rheumy came back from vacation and told a nurse to call me and say that it's unlikely my hair loss was caused by sulfasalazine because that only happens to 3% of the people who take it. I found this on AboutArthritis and am now wndering if it was the Arava. The time frame fits. Fortunately, the hair loss is minor and I have a lot of it to start with. I will breathe easier when it stops, though. Sierra ----------------------------------------------------------------- What Types Of Medications Can Cause Hair Loss? Many different types of medication are associated with hair loss. Examples of arthritis medications that can contribute to this problem include: Methotrexate (Rheumatrex) Arava (leflunomide) Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs What Actually Causes The Hair Loss? Hair loss from arthritis medication is typically secondary to what is called telogen effluvium. This type of hair loss occurs when some stress, such as a medication, causes hair roots to be pushed prematurely into a resting state, called telogen. Abrupt diffuse hair loss will typically be noticed after two or more months from the time the stress occurred (e.g. time the medication was started). But if I contemplate that thought I get even madder at my doctor! S.
Guest guest
-Sierra, I was on Methotrexate and Placquenel for more than a year and my hair was comming out in huge amounts...if I ran my fingers thru it I would get hands fulls of hair. I was only washing it about once every one and a halfweeks (In the winter...more often because I had to in the AZ summer!) as oppsed to my usual once a day. I stopped blow drying, using brushes and combs and hot rollers on it. Like you I was lucky in that I had a LOT of hair to start with...although there were areas that I could tell were noticably thinner. I couldn't have it cut because I didn't know if there was a big bald spot somewhere!! So I kept it long and gently finger combed it every day and put it up with a clip...anything to reduce the damage and stress on it!!! I am happy to tell you that when I stopped taking both of the meds....the hair loss stopped almost immediatly!! I can now take a shower and wash my hair without having to washe the hair off my feet and the tub afterwards!!...so in a very short time your hair should be back to normal!! How is that for some good news for a change!?!?!........jenna -- In , " snowdrift52003 " <snowdrift52003@...> wrote: > > Hello, > My rheumy came back from vacation and told a nurse to call me and say > that it's unlikely my hair loss was caused by sulfasalazine because > that only happens to 3% of the people who take it. > > I found this on AboutArthritis and am now wndering if it was the > Arava. Guest guest
I am on arava and Plaquinel (2 per day). I am not noticing the hair loss, so maybe your doc can switch out the mtx in favor of something else ? Just a thought as to which one is doing it. I am having great results with the arava, took 6 months but it is finally working.
