Parking Placard

Hello to All,

I have a question regarding the parking placard for the handicap

parking spaces. I was diagnosed with RA 3 years ago, I am sure I

was suffering from it for at least 2 or more years prior to my

diagnosis. I had been checked for MS and other neurological

disorders. But nothing major was ever found. Now my Rheumy thinks

it is probable that I had RA all along. Just from the symptoms I

had. Recently I was also diagnosed with Fibro. I have degenerative

disc disease as well. I have had that for 15 years or more. My

issue is this: It was suggested to me by my original Rheumy to

apply for the parking placard. I did and She signed it which of

course means I got it. The following year, She had moved out of

state, the rheumy who took her place, signed the renewal for me.

Now we are into year 3 and my current rheumy does not feel I need

it. I disagree. I do not quite understand where he is coming

from. I now have the fibromyalgia along with the RA and he won't

sign it yet. I have called him and left messages with his nurses.

He is not in his office until the tuesday after labor day, he will

then re-review my request and may or may not call me regarding it.

I may have to make an appointment to discuss it with him. I am not

severly limited to walking. But there are times that I do NEED the

closer parking. There are times that I do require the use of a

cane. I do swell around the knees and my joints ache something

terrrible. these bitter cold winters in Chicago are also causes for

flares too. I read somewhere that once you are diagnosed with RA it

is a " right " to have the placard. I know I will be getting a call

from my rheumy's office. He is trying to be optimistic and

encouraging, but I am insulted and frusturated. The application was

already pre-printed and all he had to do was sign it and fill out a

small section for the disability description. I have had this

placard for over 2 years, now doctor 3 says I don't need it? Any

suggestions or advice? Thanks to any who respond.

I'm from Canada, but here, our GPs can sign for " handicapped parking

passes " . Would your family doctor do that for you?

Hi!

I went to my family dr and had him fill the paperwork out for me. I

now have the license plates instead of the placecard. So try your

family dr, they are usually have more time for you.

I don't know where you are, but a blue placard is good for 5 years in TX.

Maybe your approach to the need for the placard is part of the trouble.

You're saying, " well, sometimes I think I might need it because I could want

to use my cane one day " , etc... That's saying that you really don't need

it, so the doc won't sign it. It's like my wife's doing in her attempt to

get SSD. I can't help her since I don't know how to navigate that outlook,

but she certainly deserves it. She has handicap plates on her van but

doesn't always use it or the power chair. She's another that says, " I don't

need that darned thing " .

Any one of your doctors can sign your application, so ask another one if you

feel comfortable with it. And, there should be a place on the form to

indicate PERMANENT disability, so it'll last longer. In my case, it will

never expire.

I agree with Dennis. I have permanent handicap placards. Sounds to me like

you are getting temporary placards which could be the problem. If this new

rheummy is NOT supportive then I would see your family practice/internists or

primary care doc.

If you read the form it will state that ANY license medical doctor can

certify the form!

Also I prefer the placards which you can use in ANY vehicle in which the

handicap person is riding verses the license plates. The plates means you can

only that vehicle.

When I went to get my placards, this was explained to me by the clerk at the

office. She said if you only use one vehicle and never go anywhere with

anyone else than get the plates. But the placard is far more versatile. So I

listened to her. I got two placards which I keep one in my car and the other

in hubby's truck. When I travel or go in someone else's car I take mine with

me.

Hi!

I am in Az and my Primary care Dr gave me the required

signature! It does not have to be your rheummy...if

you have a pain Dr. it could be him too! Don't give up

yet!...it is true that we may not need it every day at

this point..but somedays it is a real life saver and

you deserve to have it for those days! Don't give up

until someone signs it!! I would be the wheel that

squeeked and squeeked until someone signed it for

me!!(but it is just my nature to be a PIA ! (HA))!..jenna

Don't tell anyone, but I have a plate on the truck I use, on the motorcycle

since there's no rear view mirror to hang it from, and the wife's van. Then

both of us have placards to make up for the rest. We are permitted one plate

and one placard or 2 of one or the other. Down here, they don't check much

and usually don't even charge the extra $5. I like it that way.
