To: autism-georgia Sent: Monday, July 9, 2012 7:27 PMSubject: Starting a GFCF Diet for a constipated child Hi all,My son was recently diagnosed with high functioning autism. As we wait for our appointment with a biomedical doc, we are thinking about starting a GFCF diet. My concern is that our son already has an issue with constipation and it seems the diet calls for a lot of rice and not so much fiber. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start and how to make sure his constipation doesn't get worse? And should we start giving him a nutritional supplement now or wait until we see the doc? Thanks from a newbie to all of this,Kathy
Guest guest
I would say that for most kids the gfcf diet helps tremendously with constipation. Eat as much of a whole foods diet as possible. Dairy is constipating for a lot of people so that typically helps. Switch to non soy milk if possible (we like almond or my favorite coconut). My daughter is now only cf but I ended up going dairy, sugar and grain free (paleo) myself. Taca has great guide to going gfcf slowly. Also check out primal and paleo sites for great info and recipes (mark's daily apple, the clothes make the girl, whole 9, and nom nom paleo are ones I check daily!). Remember vegetables have a lot of fiber. I also use CALM magnesium drink for both myself and my daughter. It is great for sleeping and keeping u regular! Guest guest
Thanks so much for all of the info! This group has been so helpful. I've never heard of CALM. I might have to check that out for myself too. Thanks!! > > I would say that for most kids the gfcf diet helps tremendously with constipation. Eat as much of a whole foods diet as possible.
